The purpose of this study was to examine the moderate effect of inconsistency of parent's nurture attitude in relationship between youth children's internet addiction and family conflict.
Hypotheses of this study were as follows:
Hypothesis1. There will be statistically significant positive relations between youth children's internet addiction and family conflict.
Hypothesis 2. The consistency of parent's nurture attitudes will role as a moderating variable in the relations between youth children's internet addiction and family conflict. Thus consistency of parent's nurture attitude will reduce relations between family conflict and youth children's internet addiction.
Participants for this study were sampled from 500 high school students of 3 vocational high schools and 2 general high schools in Jinju. The data for this study were collected from 194 male students and 186 female students.
The questionnaire was prepared to measure 1) youth children’s internet addiction, 2) consistency of parent's nurture attitude, 3)family conflict.
Specifically, 40 items for youth children's internet addiction were selected from Young's Internet Addiction Scale (1998). The reliability (Cronbach’s ㉪ ) of this scale for this study was .957. Consistency of parent's nurture attitude was measured with 42 items from Barnes and Oison which were revised and added by the researcher of this study. Conflict of family members were measured with 10 items which were selected from Barnes and Oison's scale and Lopez's Family Structure Questionnaire. Barnes and Oison's scale was designed to diagnosis communication between parents and children. The reliability (Cronbach's ㉪) of this scale for this study was .903.
The data was statistically analyzed with SPSS 18.0 for Win. Basic statistics (means, standard deviations, and inter-correlations) were calculated for observed variables. Cronbach's ㉪ was used as reliability for each scales. To test the moderate effect of inconsistency of parent's nurture attitude in relationship between youth children's internet addiction and family conflict, hierarchial regression analysis was used.
The main results of this study were as follows:
First, the mean of internet addiction score of total sample was 1.595 (SD = 0.470) in 4 point scale. The mean of family conflict score of total sample was 1.713(SD = 0.773) in Likert type 5 points scale. And the mean of inconsistency of parent's nurture attitude score was 0.271(SD = 0.186; median = 0.500).
Second, result of multiple regression analysis showed that youth children's internet addiction positively influenced on family conflict that caused by the internet(┑=639, p<.001).
Third, regression interaction coefficient of internet addiction and inconsistency of parent's nurture attitude was significant. Thus the consistency of parent's nurture attitude role as a moderator in the relationship between family conflict and youth children's internet addiction.
This result means that consistency of parent's nurture attitude reduce the strength of effect of youth children's internet addiction on the family conflict.
Based on these results, several limits of this study and tasks of further study were discussed.
