The present study is aimed at examining the effects of group art therapy by means of games on enhancement of emotional intelligence of and peer relationship among the children accommodated in welfare centers for women and children. In order to find the consequences of such effects, a survey was conducted to 8 inmates of S Welfare Center who are enrolled at the 3rd and 5th grades of elementary schools in G City, J Province. During the period from Nov. 22, 2010 to Apr. 6, 2011, the survey was carried out starting from implementation of clinical practice, selection of subjects, pre-test, and then application of group art therapy by using games, post-test and, finally, data processing.
Used to collect and measure the data for the survey were the test tool for emotional intelligence which was developed by Yongrin Mun in 1999 and revised by Minsu Gang in 2001 to fit to elementary school children as well as the tool for testing peer relationship prepared and verified for reliability and validity by Jonghye Han in 1996 in reference to and after adaptation of Network of Relationships Inventory(NRI) developed by Furman(1985). For qualitative analysis, the pictorial test by Kinetic School Drawing(KSD) was employed before and after the test and its result was compared. The data collected thereby were processed by means of SPSS 18.0 statistical program and the findings could be summed up as follows:
first, the group art therapy using games was found to exercise positive impact upon promoting emotional intelligence of the children accommodated in the welfare centers for women and children(Z=2.521, tie value=8, P <0.006, one-way verification).
second, the group art therapy using games turned out to positively affect the peer relationship among the children accommodated in the welfare centers for women and children(Z=2.521, tie value=8, P <0.006, one-way verification).
From the comparative analysis of the pictorial test by Kinetic School Drawing(KSD) before and after the test, it became obvious that there were positive changes in promoting emotional intelligence of and peer relationship among the children of the welfare centers. In the previous pictorial test, their emotional deficiency and difficulties in peer relationship were revealed through such depiction as disorderly strokes, upper and lower limit lines, encirclement, figures seen from sides and background as well as ommission of self-image. In the post test, however, overall warm atmosphere could be sensed by the figures depicted in exact shape whether seen from front or sides and orderly lines that testified to correlating sentiment of children.
It was thus evident that the group art therapy by means of games could have positive influence on promoting emotional intelligence of and peer relationship among the children accommodated in the welfare centers by helping them perceive and accept their own and other sentiments, and form adaptable and well-rounded relationship through effective utilization of emotion.
