As turning into the information society from the industrial society, the space once treated only by physical and functional aspects has transformed into the experience space which is intentionally developed to create and sustain the changes of users’ attitudes. The experience space refers to the space supporting the behaviors and thoughts of users through their senses or perception and the space, intentionally developed to expose the relevant objects to people by using specific object-placing methods.
Along with the technological development, the experience space has started to take the digital technologies. Until recently based on the technological development, the space was only for new technologies and skills for digital, hard ware and information and communication areas centering on the advancement of new technologies. While personalized digital devices and multi-media environment have become a part of daily life, however, the freshness of the digital technologies hasn’t become sufficient enough to satisfy the needs of consumers and worse still, the excessive use of digital technologies has caused a sense of fatigue. To offset the problematic issues of the experience space, there have been attempts to understand the sentiments and behaviors of consumers and reflect the understanding into the space design. In addition, the necessity of interconnection between the users and spaces has been highlighted once again so that the experience space has become the spaces oriented in the behaviors of users.
And then, what is the applicable concept of the interconnection of the space and users? That is ‘affordance’ which imposes the corresponding relationship between the space and users.
The affordance theory has already been the theme of various studies in the ecological and psychological academia and applied to product designs among design areas. Still, the application of the theory to the space design is in its initial stage; but the application of the affordance to the experience space is expected to facilitate users to experience and perceptually understand the space in an efficient manner so as to enhance their level of cultural satisfaction.
Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose the application criteria of affordance design through classification of the factors and attributes of affordance design, which are the center of the users’ behavior and extraction of design factors which intrigue users’ behaviors in terms of their space experience.
To this end, Chapter 1 is about the background, objectives and major findings; Chapter 2 is for the concept of affordance, attribute classification of affordance and formation factor classification of affordance design; and confirmation of application methods through product design cases; Chapter 3 is for the concept of the experience space; study on the formation factors of affordance design through the cases of the experience space and type classification of the experience space; Chapter 4 is about the study on the concept of each type of the experience space and the features of affordance design with representative cases and the proposal of application methods of affordance design to the experience space centering on the users’ behaviors based on the study outcome; and last but not least, Chapter 5 is about the conclusion to propose the future study direction and to seek further developments based on the comprehensive summary of study methods, major findings and outcomes of this study.
In the process of the study, the concepts on the perception and recognition have become clear and classification of affordance attributes into behavior-inducting properties, behavior-motivating properties, behavior- supporting properties and the definition of each attributes have been made.
This study re-establishes the concept of the experience space; makes classification of the types of the experience space; extracts the relationship between affordance design factors and users’ behaviors; proposes the applicable criteria for affordance design.
