The purpose of this study was to develop an arts-based early childhood science program grounded in various theories of the importance of the arts and science for human growth and development and of the reciprocal relationship between the arts and science. And it's additionally meant to examine the effect of the program on the sensitivity, scientific attitude and aesthetic attitude of preschoolers in light of the complementary relationship between the arts and science.
Three research efforts were made:
1. Develop an early childhood science program by utilizing arts activities.
2. Investigate any possible changes in the scientific attitude of preschoolers who participate in the arts-based early childhood science program.
3. Investigate the aesthetic attitude of preschoolers who participate in the arts-based early childhood science program. The subjects in this study were 38 preschoolers from two different kindergartens. Out of them, 19 preschoolers who attended an affiliated
kindergarten in the city of Yangsan were selected as an experimental group, and the other 19 preschoolers from B kindergarten in the city of Changwon were
selected as a control group.
As for the development of the program, relevant literature and the 7th kindergarten curriculum were analyzed to determine the object and content of the program and how to develop the program, and early childhood education experts were asked to give their opinions.
Concerning the effect of the program on the scientific attitude of the preschoolers, both of the experimental and control groups took pretest and posttest in scientific attitude. The collected data were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS 12.0, and t-test was utilized.
Regarding the effect of the program on the aesthetic attitude of the preschoolers, the program was videotaped while it was conducted, and additional data were gathered by having an informal interview with the preschoolers, by analyzing their works and by analyzing this researcher's journal. After the collected data were analyzed and interpreted, triangulation was utilized by asking two early childhood education experts to review the data to improve the reliability and validity of data analysis.
The findings of the study were as follows:
As a result of implementing the program, the experimental group got to take a better scientific attitude than the control group overall. And the experimental group was ahead of the control group in the subfactors of scientific attitude involving curiosity, spontaneity, activeness, frankness, objectivity, openness, criticality, judgment reservation, cooperativeness and perseverance.
In addition, there were changes in their attention, flow, pleasure/ fantasy, emotion and reaction to beauty. Thus, the preschoolers came to take an aesthetic attitude as the program went on.
