The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a Koreanized roots of empathy program based Mary Gordon's roots of empathy(ROE) program that was conducted to teach children about empathy in Canada. The ROE program primarily aims at letting preschoolers to learn to understand their own and others' feelings, namely empathy skills, by watching the developmental process of babies and their communication with their parents after inviting babies and their parents to the classroom.
Two research efforts were made to address the purpose:
1. Develop a new ROE program geared toward Korean kindergartens based on Mary Gordon's ROE program.
2. Try out the program and observe how the selected preschoolers respond to that.
In the first stage of research, a ROE program was developed to provide an opportunity for preschoolers to foster their empathy skills by observing and understanding the relationship between invited babies and their parents, by understanding the development and temperament of the babies, by understanding their own temperament and the temperament of their friends and by understanding their own and others' feelings. This program ultimately focused on helping preschoolers to build good interpersonal relationships through mutual caring to create a happy and life-sharing community.
In the second stage, the selected preschoolers who were in a full-day class of Western age 4 in S kindergarten located in the city of Busan were asked to participate in the ROE program to try it out. The collected data were categorized into two. One category was named 'the stories of the ROE classroom' that described the invited babies, their mothers, the homeroom teacher of the preschoolers serving as a participant observer and what happened in the classroom during the program. The other was named 'the stories of the preschool participants' that showed how they responded to the program in terms of the four components of the program identified in the development process of the program.
In 'the stories of the ROE classroom,' the invited babies, their mothers and what happened in the classroom where the preschoolers met the babies and their mothers were described to define the meaning of their meeting through the ROE program in the classroom.
In 'the stories of the preschool participants,' the preschoolers were able to foster their empathy skills when they learned to understand their own and others' feelings and put themselves in another's place in the course of observing how the babies felt. At the same time, they learned about the value of caring and consideration and found it meaningful to cooperate and communicate with others while they observed how the mothers took care of and interacted with their babies.
