In the past, consumers were satisfied with the buying behavior which is depicted placing primary priority on the acquisition of economical but quality-assuring products with expeditiousness. However, in contemporary consumer society, consumers are more focused on shopping behavior which is said to be rather recreation-oriented than merely utility-oriented. In the early 1990s as technological advances allowed hybrid shopping mall developments to foster the same magical experiences that were once only seen in national amusement parks such as Disney World.
Notably, brand experience has attracted a lot of attention in marketing practice. Marketing practitioners have come to realize that understanding how consumers experience brands is critical for developing marketing strategies for goods and services. With differentiating strength built on the entertainment experience, a shopping mall is perceivable as more than just for marketing purchases. So, the creation of entertainment experience may play essential role in enhancing the shopping mall's competitive edge. But the amount of scholarly literature available on hybrid shopping malls is very limited.
According to the theoretical background mentioned above, the purpose of this study can be summarized as followed:
First, this study examines the effects of brand experiences and personalities on hybrid shopping mall satisfaction and loyalty. Second, the empirical study are carried on whether there is a difference between generations and genders on the consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice. Third, this study is to provide an implication for Korean hybrid shopping malls by deriving the results from the effects of brand experiences and personalities on brand performances and consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice.
In order to examine the effects of brand experiences and personalities on hybrid shopping mall satisfaction and loyalty, the brand experience scale by Brakus et al.(2009), the store personality scale by d'Astous and Lévesque(2003) are used. In order to measure consumer satisfaction and loyalty, the satisfaction items used in Anselmsson's(2006) study are adopted and the loyalty scale developed by Baker, Levy and Grewal(1992) and utilized by Chebat, El Heidhli and Sirgy(2000) are used.
In this study, 500 valid questionnaires are used. In order to test reliability Cronbach's as and to test validity Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis are used. With the proposed model, we examine the effects of brand experiences and personalities on hybrid shopping mall satisfaction and loyalty. In order to analyze the data and hypothesis AMOS 4.0 was used, and 6 out of 7 hypothesis were accepted. Main findings from the thesis are as follows:
First, hybrid shopping mall brand experience affects satisfaction, loyalty, and shopping mall brand personality. Second, hybrid shopping mall brand personality affects consumer satisfaction positively, but does not affect loyalty directly. Third, satisfaction on hybrid shopping mall affects consumer loyalty. Last, hybrid shopping mall brand experience and personality affects loyalty indirectly.
In the process of studying the effects of brand experiences and personalities on brand performances, the need for examining the consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice has arisen. So, a research question is presented. The main purposes of the research question are to explore whether there is a difference between generation and genders on the consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice. In order to examine the consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice, items from the Martin's(2009) study are used.
Among the 500 valid questionnaires collected, 470 questionnaires are used, eliminating 30 questionnaires which are neither generation X nor Y. As a result of Exploratory Factor Analysis, five hybrid shopping mall brand choice factors are obtained. In order to assess the difference between generation and genders on the consumers' hybrid shopping mall brand choice, t-test are used. the results of the empirical analysis are as follows:
First, among the hybrid shopping mall brand choice factors, only functional factor affects generation X. Second, only malling attitude affects men and variety factor affects women. Third, there are no differences among Y generation men and women, and X and Y generation women. Fourth, only functional factor affects X generation women and malling attitude affects X generation men. Lastly, only malling attitude affects Y generation men.
The results of this study show that hybrid shopping mall brand experiences have effects on not only brand personalities but satisfaction and loyalty as well. So, it would be worthwhile to explore which patterns occur for which experience dimensions.
Although some the hybrid shopping mall brand choice factors in this study are similar between gender and generations, there are some findings that indicate differences among genders and generations. So, there are some aspects mall development companies should remember in order to satisfy the needs of the different segments.
It is meaningful that this study attempts to provide academic researchers and mall practitioners with a more comprehensive foundation in which to view and comprehend the effect of hybrid shopping mall brand experiences on brand personalities and brand performances, and differences in hybrid shopping mall brand choice factors between genders and generations.
