This study aimed to recognize about correlations between junior temperament, character, defense mechanism and mobile-phone overuse.
For this purpose, the study used a questionnaire on mobile-phone addiction scale, senior temperament and character inventory, and defense types, objecting to 655 junior and senior high school students at Daegu City, Gyeongbuk Province. Regarding to collected data, this study carried out frequency analysis, t-test, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis by using PASW statistics 18.0, and the results were same as followings.
First, schoolgirls were higher significantly than schoolboys in mobile-phone overuse’s levels, and also senior high schools’ students were higher than junior ones in its uses.
Second, novelty seeking, harm avoidance, and reward dependence at sub-scales of temperature dimensions showed positive relations significantly with mobile-phone overuses, and persistence was appeared as having negative significant relations. Self-directedness and cooperativeness among sub-scales of character dimensions showed negative relations with mobile-phone overuses.
Third, novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence at sub-scales of temperament dimensions were appeared as affecting influences to mobile-phone overuses, and self-directedness and cooperativeness at character dimensions showed significant influences to its overuses.
Fourth, immature defense mechanism, self-inhibiting defense mechanism, conflict-avoiding one at sub-types of defense mechanisms showed positive relations with mobile-phone overuses. Also, the immature defense mechanism was appeared as affecting influences to mobile-phone overuses.
Fifth, most sub-scales of temperament and character dimensions showed significant relations with the defense mechanism. However, the novelty seeking did not show relations with adaptive defense mechanism, and persistence, cooperativeness with self-inhibiting one either. In addition, characteristics of the temperament and character were appeared as not affecting significant influences to the defense mechanism.
Sixth, as predictor variables of the mobile-phone overuse, gender, scholarship, character, novelty seeking at sub-scale of the defense mechanism showed 13.1%, and this figure was appeared as explaining about mobile-phone overuses most perfectly. And then, self-directedness, reward dependence, immature defense mechanism, gender, and cooperativeness followed in order.
Through this research, the necessity of junior’s personal temperament and characters was confirmed in order to prevent and improve their mobile-phone overuses. Lastly, a proposition for subsequent researches was discussed together with limitations of this study.
