The purpose of this study is to verify influence and effect on improving preschoolers' self-esteem by applying a reading activity program to preschoolers through utilizing picture book, which is therapeutic resource. Accordingly, this study aimed to verify its effects through utilizing picture book related to self-esteem, with which preschoolers are familiar, through considering bibliotherapeutic questioning by session and through the reading activity. The following are the research problems for performing this objective.
1. How is changed preschoolers' self-esteem, which was shown in the reading activity program with application of picture book as bibliotherapeutic resource?
1) Does the reading activity program with application of picture book have effect on preschoolers' academic self-esteem?
2) Does the reading activity program with application of picture book have effect on preschoolers' familial/social self-esteem?
3) Does the reading activity program with application of picture book have effect on preschoolers' affective/physical self-esteem?
2. What about a change in language appearance related to preschoolers' self-esteem in the process of the reading activity program with application of picture book as bibliotherapeutic resource?
1) What about preschoolers' positive/negative academic language appearance through a questioning method in the reading activity program?
2) What about preschoolers' positive/negative familial/social language appearance through a questioning method in the reading activity program?
3) What about preschoolers' positive/negative affective/physical language appearance through a questioning method in the reading activity program?
3. What about preschoolers' psychological and affective change in a psychological diagnosis picture test of the reading activity program with application of picture book as bibliotherapeutic resource?
1) What about pre․post psychological and affective change in HTP?
2) What about pre․post psychological and affective change in KFD?
For this, the session-based reading activity program was carried out by twice a week centering on 3 boy and girl preschoolers, who showed low score in a self-esteem test among 30 preschoolers in fully 5 years at Y kindergarten where is located in Seoul Metropolis as for subjects of this study. Preschoolers' change in self-esteem and psychological change were measured through the reading activity data and the session-based therapeutic questioning. To verify effects of program, the whole process in 10 sessions of program was recorded and transcribed. Thus, a trend in a linguistic change was examined in relation to preschoolers' self-esteem, social esteem/familial esteem, and affective/physical esteem. Also, as a case study, it carried out pre․post picture test(HTP, KFT) of the reading program targeting 3 preschoolers whose self-esteem is significantly low, examined their psychological and affective change, tested post-test of self-esteem, measured frequency of language appearance, and examined a change in self-esteem.
The results are as follows. First, in the self-esteem test, the preschooler 1(TJ) was 18 points in the pre-test of self-esteem, thereby having tended to be low, but was 24 points in the post-test of self-esteem. Thus, the score deviation in 6-point difference was shown. The preschooler 2(HS) was 19 points in the pre-test of self-esteem, but was 25 points in the post-test of self-esteem after applying bibliotherapeutic program. Thus, the score deviation in 6-point difference was shown as well. The preschooler 3(JH) was 16 points in the pre-test of self-esteem and was 20 points in the post-test of self-esteem after applying bibliotherapeutic program. The incremental score deviation in 4-point difference was shown. Thus, an effect of improving self-esteem is being clarified.
Second, a change in preschoolers' language appearance through a questioning method in the reading activity program was shown the negative language appearance more than positive language appearance in familial/social self-esteem for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd session. However, the positive/negative language appearance didn't appear almost equally from the 5th session. From the 7th session, the positive language appearance showed a rapid rise compared to the negative language appearance. From the 10th session, the positive language appearance increased more than the beginning compared to negative language appearance. Especially, as for the preschooler 3(JH), as the aggressive and violent language appearance rapidly reduced in the 7th session, the positive language expression showed frequency of a rise in 7 times for familial/social self-esteem.
The preschooler 1(TJ) seemed to be same in frequency of positive/negative language appearance in the 1st session, but was much shown the frequency of negative language appearance in familial/social self-esteem from the 2nd session to the 3rd session. In the 4th session, the frequency of positive/negative language appearance was same. With entering the 7th session, the frequency of positive language appearance increased. In the 10th session, the frequency of positive language appearance showed a rise in 8 times. The preschooler 2(HS) was much in frequency of negative language appearance from the 1st session to the 4th session, but was shown to be same in positive language and negative language from the 5th session after applying the bibliotherapeutic activity program. As the positive language appearance increased from the 6th session, the frequency of positive language in 7 times was indicated from the 10th session. Accordingly, in the bibliotherapeutic activity program as the bibliotherapeutic resource, the negative language appearance was shown much until the 4th session. However, from the 5th session, the frequency of positive/negative language appearance came to be similar. From the 6th session, the positive language appearance increased rapid
