The reading textbooks of the Korean language as a foreign language have been developed to enhance the Korean language reading ability. Through the reading activities within the textbooks, the learners cultivate the abilities to accurately understand the reading texts and the ability to speak Korean fluently.
The universal teaching methods of cultivating the reading ability so far have been stepwise teaching methods, which are divided into before reading, during reading, and after reading.
In this case, the stage, in which the learners’ understanding of reading is finally established, is the stage after reading by planning the activities after reading so that the learners’ interest elicited from the activities before reading can be connected with the texts that they learn during reading.
Most of the existing researches related to reading have been those related to the stage before reading and the stage during reading such as the strategies used to make the learners understand the contents of reading texts effectively or researches on organizing the contents of texts or adaptation of materials and the activities before efficient reading. Those researches have been not connected with the researches on the activities after reading that help the learners so that they can connect the information they have gotten through reading in the stage of during reading with their own transcendental knowledge and store it in the long-term memory.
Focusing on this point, in this research, the activities after reading appeared in reading materials of the Korean language were analyzed and the problems found in the process were remedied, and this researcher attempted to explore the schemes to present the principles of planning the activities after reading and the activities after reading to be reflected on the teaching materials.
The composition of this research is as follows.
Chapter I discussed the necessity and purpose of this research. And questions were raised after examining preceding researches related to Korean language reading education and teaching methods of reading and dissertations discussing diverse connected teaching methods of reading.
Chapter II examined the theories related to reading and teaching methods of reading and established and presented the criteria for classifying the types of activities after reading that this research attempted to classify.
Chapter III analyzed the types of activities after reading appeared in the Korean language reading texts that the Korean language educational institutions are currently using, and examined the current conditions of the activities after reading appeared in the Korean language teaching materials.
Chapter IV supplemented the problems of the activities after reading appeared in the Korean language teaching materials and explored the schemes of planning based on the principles of planning the activities after reading and presented diverse schemes of activities after reading that should be reflected on the Korean language teaching materials.
Chapter V summarized the contents of discussions comprehensively and revealed the significance of this research and rounded off with the suggestions on follow-up researches.
This research has limitations in that the methods of the activities after reading that were presented in this research did not lead to the research on what differences can be made according to each of elementary, intermediate, and advanced stages when those methods are utilized.
However, the principles of planning the activities after reading and the planning schemes that were presented by this research will become grounds of structuring the activities after reading. The significance of this research can be found in that the actual methods presented regarding the activities after reading can become references in composing the activities after reading in teaching materials.
