The effect of zirconia core thickness on color tone blocking of discolored tooth and metal post and the effect of treatment condition on coloring of zirconia core by liquid coloring agent were studied.
First, Twenty porcelain samples and 4-metal samples were bonded to zirconia cores with different thickness with cement. The color- spectral characteristics were measured using Shadepilot equipment. Depending on the thickness of zirconia core, the value of brightness(△L*: color-spectral characteristic) was increased within limited range, whereas the value of △a* and △b* were decreased. Changes of sample color were observed depending on the thickness of zirconia, but the range of change did not exceed the scope range of shade guide. In the case of metal posts, shade guide color of D2 was observed when the thickness of zirconia core was 0.3mm, but the shade color changed to B1 when the thickness of zirconia core was 0.5mm. However, in case of porcelain, shade guide color were found to be B1 for all cases. In the conclusion, the zirconia core thickness of 0.3mm was enough for porcelain case to protect discolored tooth, whereas 0.5mm or more is recommended for metal post.
Second, Four liquid coloring agents and different dipping time, and different sintering conditions were chosen for the investigation of coloring of zirconia core. Zirconia blocks used had a density of ~50% theoretical and showed neck morphology of initial sintering stage. Measured sintered density were between 5.7 and 6.02g/cm3, therefore zirconia core samples were dense sintered body. Variety of colors from Al to C4 according to shade guide, were observed by spectro- photometer. Therefore it can be concluded that the color of zirconia core can be controlled by controlling treatment condition such as dipping time, sintering temperature, sintering time, coloring agent, and so on. Uniform microstructures were observed in all cases. Small grains on grain boundary were observed and the amount of small grains increased when coloring agent change from #1 to #4. However, the effect of small grains on the microstructure of zirconia core was negligible in this research.
