This study compares a Korean request speech act with a Chinese request speech act and analyzes what kind of difference exists between them. The purposes of the study are to examine (1) whether Chinese Korean learners (CKLs) are influenced by their native language, Chinese, in case when they commit a request act in Korean, (2) whose speech act the CKLs prefer between Korean and Chinese, and (3) how the request strategies differs according to factors when a request is made.
The contents of this study are as follows. Chapter Ⅰ describes the purpose of the study and proposes research questions along with literature reviews. Limited studies have been made by comparing a Chinese and a Korean language up to now and it can be said that there have been no pragmatic studies for the CKLs. Based on the examination of previous studies, it was found that studies on a foreign request speech act are usually limited to English speaking Korean learners or Japanese Korean learners, so the necessity for a pragmatic study, which is actually able to helpful to the CKLs, is also explained.
Chapter Ⅱ describes the theoretical backgrounds of a speech act theory, the concept of request speech act, and the strategy of a request speech act.
Chapter Ⅲ made a situational investigation using discourse completion test (DCT) to set suitable request situations related to the methodology of the study. A pilot test was carried out with such a result before making the experiment and a framework of analysis was generated based on the result of the pilot test. In the experiment, 12 situational analyses were carried out proposing analysis methods. Participants of three groups, Korean native speakers (KNSs), Chinese native speakers (CNSs), the CKLs took the DCT to be analyzed their pre-request strategy, request strategy and ending strategy and compared among three groups.
Chapter Ⅳ discusses about the results obtained through the experiment. The holistic analysis was carried out and followed by each analysis for groups in respective situations. Additionally, analyses of each group were made in accordance with factors, that is, a burden degree, familiarity and relational position. Through the study result, it is possible to find the features of the use aspect of the pre-request strategy, request strategy and ending strategy of each group.
Chapter Ⅴ the study wrapped up this research by reanalyzing the previous analysis comprehensively and mentioning the limitations of the research.
Discusses suggestions for Korean teaching for Chinese Korean learners. It was found that the CKLs used a strategy closer to the CNSs than the KNSs when making a request in Korean, because they were influenced by their native language. Therefore, the CKLs need to learn implication ability similar that of a Korean to increase their communication ability.
