The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the economic problems and patterns of consumption, experienced by married migrant women through in-depth interview, one of qualitative research method. A rapid transformation to the multicultural family causes a variety of troubles and problems at hand. In addition, the recent increase of the married migrant women in urban areas, positively exposed to the consuming environment, causes their own dedicated economic problems and patterns. From this perspective, in this thesis I will discuss how the married migrant women in urban areas manage their purchase, the factors enhancing and relieving, and common patterns of these mutual reactions mentioned.
The interview carried out from Mar. ’11 to May ’11 for 11 the married migrant women in Seoul, each interviewee participated twice or three times of in-depth interview every week for 60~90 mins. Especially, the interview covers a variety of method as such the in-person interview for the individual participant, group interview, telephone interview. The venue of the interview was decided upon the preference of interviewee, where they feel comfortable such as home or other personally preferred locations, in the mean time the details of interview has been recorded upon the acceptance of the interviewee then analyzed.
The results of this thesis can be divided into economic attributes of the married migrant women and their consumption culture. To begin with, their economic attributes are as below.
Firstly, the economic problems for the married migrant women of multicultural family recognized in connection with various family situations. Even though the income of the family for the married migrant women appears to be less than the average level of income for the families in urban areas, the participants who developed a happy family tends to positively realize their relatively poor economic situation. Secondly, the married migrant women, who joined the Korean culture through the media of “marriage”. So their families have been gived to the limited budgets from other family members, therefore not being able to manage their economic life and consuming actions as a proactive consumer. Thirdly, the married migrant women appeal the difficulties in economic life, especially in the relationship with other family members and the role of housewives in the family group.
Next, the consumption culture of the married migrant women can be divided into five aspects as below.
Firstly, the married migrant women, who joined the Korean culture through the media of “marriage”, shows a passive pattern of consumption since they feel they still experience the transactional phase. Secondly, their main consuming activity is restricted to the extent of the purchase of groceries only for realizing their existence, not been fairly exposed to leisure activity cause of lack of education and experiences. Thirdly, the married migrant women basically show a burden and fear for the consuming activities. Therefore, of course it depends on countries to countries by in large they tend to make a purchase together with their family members and friends. Fourthly, the lack of education for the economies/consuming activities and difficulties in communication limits the active purchasing activities. Fifthly, the relationships within the family circle of married immigrant women in their own country to help families in economic life and if you were a passive consumer.
Finally, a various range of systematic supports and subsidies are in need to encourage the growth of the the married migrant women in urban as a sound consumer accordingly. Firstly, for the purpose of the married migrant women’s soft lending in Korean consuming culture, the Government and Local government shall investigate and analyze the entire situation of the married migrant women in-depth. Secondly, the governmental subsidies shall be provided to encourage the other family members to accept the married migrant women as a real member of family. Thirdly, the various psychological assistances shall be provided so that the married migrant women become a sound member of consumer, family, and society. Fourthly, the economic independence is the main issue for being an active consumer. Therefore, the vocational education for the married migrant women shall be provided in terms of the strategy of empowerment for them. Fifthly, the entire and specialized one-stop system for the surroundings around the multi-cultural family and the married migrant women shall be established to assist them in case of facing the problems-related and to be utilized as guidance to others in need.
Moreover, a various range of the realistic service program shall be provided for the multicultural family and the married migrant women. Firstly, the realistic education shall be provided for the married migrant women to be a sound and active consumer. Secondly, the mentoring and continuous post-case caring service shall be provided to assist the married migrant women mentally relieved. Thirdly, a various range of program shall be continuous provided for other family members of the married migrant women. Parent education .the economic education of their children and so on shall be provided. Furthermore, not only for the married migrant women, but also the study for the economic situations and patterns of consumption in the various surroundings shall be investigated.
