Today in the world of vocation, many new jobs appear while old ones disappear. All people instinctively have a desire to look beautiful, i.e., aesthetic desire. Both men and women pursue beauty and beautiful life. In particular, more women have participated in social and public works, accordingly, the area of beauty science becomes prosperous business, leading to the creation of many professional vocations in the area. As more persons prefer vocations related with beauty science, kinds of beauty institution are increasing such as educational institutes, vocational schools, high schools, colleges, universities, and the master's course. This paper was conducted to strengthen efficacy of beauty vocational education by examining problems in curriculums of beauty science in Seoul Vocational Training Institute that takes charge of a part of vocational education, in the side of public welfare for Seoul citizens who are at the lower levels of society.
Under the abovementioned purposes, this paper examined ideas and transition process of vocational education, actual conditions and trends of vocational education in advanced countries, went over characters and reality of each beauty education institute, then, analyzed curriculums of beauty science in vocational schools. Study results are as follows;
1. The first is before beginning beauty science curriculums;
As for path that students get information of schools, 50% of trainees answered 'by introduction of acquaintances , which told their satisfaction rate. As for application motives, 54.8% applied because of self-employment opportunity and easy employment, 31.6% applied because it helps make a living and charge-free training, which indicated that it is necessary for people of lower income in national and local self-governing bodies.
2. The second is results of curriculums;
Answers were mostly affirmative toward teachers' knowledge levels and teaching ways, but negative or average toward facilities & equipments. Respondents’ affirmative answers toward or were satisfied with textbooks and training contents, but they thought that courses were negative against theories and practical skills. It means a dissatisfaction with the system problem that a license is given when graduating from a vocational school under Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development, but a license or a permission are acquired only through examinations when graduating from a municipal vocational school, which was proved by answers that various and practical skills are not taught because of test preparation. They answered that the society recognizes the beauty science department in a desirable direction mostly, required a deepened education toward answers asking educational directions necessary for prospects of beauty science curriculums, and wanted practical educational improvements that enable trainees to apply educational contents to job sites. All of answers suggested a correction of educational curriculums from emphasis on license acquirement to practical skills.
3. The third is courses after finishing curriculums;
Most of trainees wanted to open their own independent business or be employed which answers proved that trainees who finish beauty science courses have a job or open a self-employed business more easily than in any other vocational areas. And most of them wanted to take in-service trainings related with their majors, after finishing courses.
4. Answers for subjective questions are as follows;
People working in job-sites required theory-education & skill-education about hair & sculpture care after frequent hairdyes and perms, about reliable hair dyeing and decoloring, and liked to take in-service trainings regularly. Students demanded supplementing or expanding living expenses and practice materials as they depend on free education, and required regular site-trains and more practical skills, as for educational contents.
The above results demand following improvement plans to develop beauty science & beauty science curriculums in vocational school.
First, jobs related with beauty science are cognized as ones of easy employment & independent business opening with a good prospect, therefore, public organs need invest more for social welfare businesses educating non-governmental people. Living expenses should be given for the poor, expenses for training should increase for sufficient practical trainings.
Second, under these conditions that most curriculums cannot help emphasizing qualifying examinations, practical trainings in real-sites are required, therefore, particular advanced curriculums are necessary, which are connected with real industrial sites, except for regular courses.
Third, in the present license system for hairdressers, a license is given to trainees who graduate from a senior technical school that has 1226 hours' training, trainees who finish 1440 hours' training of a vocational school can get an exemption benefit of theory courses, consequently, the system conferring a license through qualifying exams has many problems. If the burden of qualifying exams is removed, more practical skills as well as more various training contents could be given. The system had better be unified by improvement that students finishing vocational schools get a license.
