The purpose of this study is to investigate how the integration activities of singing affect children's music perception abilities and interests.
For the purpose, research question of this study were as follows:
1. How does the integration activities of singing affect children's music perception abilities?
2. How does the integration activities of singing affect children's interests?
For this study, 15 participants (8 of male and 7 of female) who are in class aged 5 of N public kindergarten and 15 participants (8 of male and 7 of female) who are in class aged 5 of K public kindergarten located in Gwangju were selected as experimental group and comparison group, respectively.
The musical intelligence research tool, one of 7 assessment tools in Project Spectrum developed by Harvard Project Zero Research Team, adapted by Lee, Mi Ok in 2003 was used for the assessment of children's music perception abilities. To assess children's interests, the learning interest-checking tool used by Lee, Mi Kyung in 2003, and revised and supplemented by me in 2010 was used.
The integration activities of singing were conducted 3 times per week for 8 weeks (total 23 times) from August 23, 2010 to October 15, 2010.
The SPSS programs were used to process the research data. In order to investigate how the integration activities of singing influence children's music perception abilites and interests, T-test was executed between experimental group and comparison group.
The results of this study are as follows:
Firstly, in terms of children's music perception abilities between experimental group and comparison group, there was a significant difference statistically. The integration activities of singing have a positive impact on children's music perception abilities.
There appeared in differences statistically in sub-areas of music perception abilities such as 'knowing songs', 'playing and connecting', and 'listening and connecting'. On the other hand, 'knowing errors' which is one of sub-area in music perception abilities did not appear in difference statistically.
Secondly, as for the children's interests between experimental group and comparison group, there was a significant difference statistically. The integration activities of singing have the effect on an enhacement of children's interests. As for the children's interests between experimental group and comparison group, there was a significant difference statistically. A look at the sub-area of children's interests suggests that there was a significant difference statistically in 'attention', 'conscientiousness', and 'concern'. However, 'interests' and 'confidence' which is one of sub-area in children's interests did not appear in difference statistically.
The results of this study show that the integration activities of singing have the positive effect on children's music perception abilities and interests. As a result, this study suggest that the integration activities of singing is the effective way to improve the children's music perception abilities and interests.
