This study intended to promote children's happiness and improve their self-concept when they enjoy and explore nature through nature play activities. They would feel psychologically stable, explore and approach the environment around them more actively, enhance confidence in everything, form a positive self-concept of themselves and others, and feel happy.
The research questions were as follows:
1. Are nature play activities effective in increasing children's happiness?
2. Are nature play activities effective in enhancing children's self-concept?
3. Are children's happiness and self-concept interrelated?
Twenty-five children, all of whom were 4 years old, at a kindergarten in C province composed the experimental group, and another 25 children at the same age at a different kindergarten in the same region constituted the control group, which resulted in 50 subjects. The children in the experimental group participated in 16 nature play activities in total, twice a week, for 9 weeks.
The child happiness scale developed by Lee(2009) was used to measure the children's happiness, and the child self-concept test by Lee(2004) was used to measure the children's self-concept.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, nature play activities were effective at increasing children's happiness.
Among the sub-factors, it was involvement, health, spirit, peer relationship, teacher-child relationship, emotion, parent-child relationship, satisfaction in life that showed statistical significance.
Second, nature play activities were positively effective in enhancing children's self-concept. It was social identity, emotional identity, physical identity that showed statistical significance.
Third, children's happiness and self-concept were significantly and positively interrelated. It means that the happier the children feel the higher the level of self-concept was. Therefore, feeling of happiness and self-concept positively affect each other.
These results prove that nature play activities increase children's happiness and they positively affect self-concept development. Also, nature play activities can be a good means for children to begin living a happy life by constantly improving abilities related to self-concept, such as skills to satisfy their needs, feeling of joy, social relationship and so on, when this interrelatedness between happiness and self-concept is fully considered
