This study aims to prepare measures to help children of
multicultural home to use childcare facilities, to provide base data to improve the effect of multicultural education in such facilities, and to seek ways to effectively connect families to such facilities, by analyzing the request extent and expectation of childcare program performed by the father of multicultural home.
This study analyzed 156 fathers of multicultural home who live in Jinju city and surrounding areas and who use childcare facilities, about the degree of adaptation, the request extent for childcare program, the evaluation and expectation for childcare facilities.
It used SPSS WIN 14.0 to conduct descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s test and it calculated Cronbach’s α to verify reliability.
The results are summarized as follows: First, in regard to the degree of children’s adaptation to childcare facilities, they adapted to human relationship, followed by emotion and life. The request extent for childcare program was highest in language development, followed by social·emotional development, basic life habit, cognitive development, multicultural education and health
improvement, in turn. As a result of examining evaluation and expectation for childcare facilities, they mostly recognized to receive help when their children adapt to facilities and in general, they were highly satisfied with that. To overcome any difficulty in child care,
they mostly received help from the people around them, or used the mass media or settled by themselves. What they expected about childcare facilities was recognition of cultural diversity, followed by concerning about their children and parent counseling·education.
Second, it examined the difference in adaptation to childcare facilities. As the result, it varied depending on characteristics of mother and child, rather than that of father. The factors affecting such difference were the level of mother’s education, the degree of Korean communication skills, child’s age, period attending to childcare facilities, and the degree of child’s Korean communication skills.
Third, as to the request extent for childcare program for
multicultural home, there was significant difference in such the request extent for health improvement depending on the degree of child’s Korean communication skills and for multicultural education depending on the level of mother’s education.
Forth, with regard to evaluation and expectation about childcare facilities, there was significant difference in the degree of adaptation to facilities depending on father’s occupation and the period attending to. It presented significant difference in settlement for child care
depending on father’s occupation, the level of education, period of mother’s residence and the degree of mother’s Korean communication skills, the number of child attending to, the attending period, the degree of child’s Korean communication skills.
