The modern multicultural society requires understanding of various people of different races, sexes, social classes, languages, and cultural backgrounds. So, in such a society, people should communicate with each other through mutual understanding and cooperation and narrow down the bias toward others. This study aims to study the effect of the story time with discussion activities through the multicultural picture books on pro-social behavior and the reduction of bias, thus offering a preliminary study program on teaching and learning methods related to early childhood education.
The research questions of the study are as follows:
1. What is the effect of dramatic play activity using multicultural picture books on early children's pro-social behavior?
2. What is the effect of dramatic play activity using multicultural picture books on early children's bias reduction?
To solve these problems, the subjects of 40 five-year-old children who attended B kindergarten in Cheongju city, Chungbuk were chosen. Twenty students in a experimental group and 20 in a control group were evenly distributed based on family background and birth date when first grouped into classes.
The children in experimental group had been read multicultural picture books and went through dramatic play activity; the control-group had been read general picture books and went through dramatic play activity. The experimental treatments had been administered twice a week for 6 weeks.
To measure pro-social behaviors of the early children ⌜Prosocial Behavior Scale for Young Children: PBSYC⌟ developed by Kim Youngok was used as a measuring tool. ⌜Child Prejudice Measurement⌟ was used to measure the bias, which was revised by the researcher based on ⌜Child Prejudice Measurement by Seo Hyeon (2003)⌟ revised into ⌜Child Prejudice Measurement(2008)⌟ by So Seongsuk.
The result of pre-test showed that the two groups are equivalent groups in pro-social behavior and bias. All the data are analysed by t-test using SPSS 12.0 program.
The results of the study are as follows: First, there was a significant difference in the pro-social behaviors. The experiment-group showed more pro-social behaviors than the control-group. The experiment-group became better accustomed to such behaviors as leadership, helping others, communication, thoughtful consideration, empathy, controlling emotion and so on than the other.
Second, there was a considerable difference in regard to bias between the two groups. The experiment-group children had less bias than the control-group.
In conclusion, the dramatic play activity using multicultural picture books was very effective in many ways. It offered opportunities to young children to have positive attitude toward different culture, as well as helped them to increase pro-social behaviors and decrease various bias. It means that it could be applied to a teaching and learning method related to early childhood education.
