The music education at school is not to teach mere knowledge or skills but to teach the cultural heritage of the nation and the people, and can be considered as preparing foundations to develop the culture and the thought of that age. In 7th education curriculum, Korean music education was emphasized to create and lead our music culture in the age of information and diversity of 21st century. In accordance with the emphasis on the Korean music education, the proportion of Korean music education was increased and its contents and scope were expanded than previous education curriculum. However, it cannot be determined that Korean music education is activated only with these efforts.
In this study, to verify how much its importance was increased and activation was made in the school education sites with the increased proportion of Korean music education, the actual state of performance assessment related to Korean music was evaluated by the performance assessment plans of 5th and 6th grade music course at elementary schools in Chungbuk area, that is, it was aimed to analyse the importance and current status of Korean music education through investigating actual state of performance assessment in the education sites, not in the annual curriculum planning.
The methods used in this study were to examine the rate and the date of performance assessment related to Korean music out of performance assessment contents, the proportion and the distribution of performance assessment questions related to Korean music, and the types and methods of performance assessment related to Korean music through analysing collected data for performance assessment plans of 5th and 6th grade music course from the 40 elementary schools in Chungbuk area designated as research subject school, and the conclusions were deduced.
The conclusions deduced through this study are as follows.
First, Rate of performance assessment related to Korean music of music course performance assessment represented low as 26.2%. While Korean music occupied 34~36% of music course curriculum contents, the rate of performance assessment showed 8~10% lower than the proportion.
Second, in the performance assessment rate related to Korean music by area, understanding represented very low as 6.8%, and creation and listening represented low as 18% and 18.7% respectively.
Third, the rates of performance assessment related to Korean music in the singing and instrumental music showed relatively high but since assessment contents were limited to specific area, the extent was very limited. And understanding, creation and listening area showed same patterns.
Fourth, performance assessment related to Korean music was not diversified in methods and patterns and overly concentrated in limited methods. The short-answer type of questions were occupied the most in understanding area, and it manifested that in performance assessment related to Korean music, diverse assessment methods were not employed, mainly employing practice and checklist assessment method in instrumental music and singing areas, the worksheet assessment method in creation area, and questionnaire assessment and narrative assessment methods in listening area.
Through these conclusion, while Korean music education was increased quantitatively in the 7th education curriculum, the qualitative importance did not reach to that level. Therefore, to activate Korean music education, development of diverse teaching data and assessment tools is required and the efforts to use them have to supported in the school education sites.
