Ⅰ. Introduction
The aim of this study was to examine factors that may affect the degree of delinquency of juvenile probationers, among such variables as demographics, parenting attitudes and parent-adolescent communication.
The study sample was made up of 156 youth probationers, referred to 10 probation offices across the nation by the juvenile courts. The data analysis was carried out using descriptive and frequency analysis, t-test, corelation analysis and multiple regression analysis, employing PASW 18.0 Program.
The results were as follows.
First, no correlations were found between demographic variables and the degree of delinquency of juvenile probationers.
Second, of the parenting attitude variables, parents rational/irrational sub-variable was associated with the degree
of delinquency of juvenile probationers, demonstrating that the
score on the rational/irrational sub-scale of parents had negatively significant correlation with the degree of juvenile probationers.
Third, of the parents-adolescent communication variables, the score on the problematic communication scale had positively significant correlation with the degree of juvenile delinquency.
Finally, multiple regression analysis, which was conducted in
order to investigate factors predicting the degree of delinquency, revealed that the rational/irrational parenting attitude of father and the family structure variable significantly predicted the degree of delinquency of youth probationers, although R² of the model was relatively low.
In conclusion, juvenile delinquency may be affected by multiple variables including peer group related variables and social variables as well as family related variables. Thus, it is suggested that further research should include social and environmental variables associated with juvenile delinquency.
