21 century is called the age of cultural diversity. Science, politics, economy and culture through the world are changing rapidly. Korea is aiming for open society by promoting mutual understanding and cooperation with other countries to reflect the trend of the times.
Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced that the number of foreigners who reside in Korea is over 1200 thousand as of August 2009 and Korea is faced with the age of multiracial society. In this situation, music education needs to contribute to promoting harmony and coexistence and understanding cultural diversity.
This study proposed teaching method of music for the children of multi cultural family centering on play songs of Japan, Chinese ( including ethnic Koreans living in China), Philippines and Korea. The teaching method of music for the children of multi cultural family is designed to understand cultural diversity based on integrated musical activities in combination with other subjects.
Play songs were selected and introduced by making a reference to elementary school music textbooks.
Play songs of Japan were designed so that not only pitch movement can be grasped by using Kodaly's musical note but also the timber of Japan's traditional musical instruments can be appreciated by providing a method that enables students to learn about plays easily.
In play songs of China, the play of drop-the-handkerchief and China's culture were introduced. Here, Korea' musical scale and China's musical scale were compared.
In play songs of Philippines, play of hide-and-seek the culture of Philippines were introduced. The play songs of Philippines were designed so that students can exercise rhythm by making good use of rhythm instruments such as triangle, tambourine and castanets.
In play songs of Korea, the play of pulling out leg that can help form a close bond between participants was introduced. In addition, a teaching method music that aims to help students play janggu (a double-headed drum pinched in at the middle) with Jajinmori rhythm that is one of Korea's traditional rhythms was introduced.
"2009 survey of status of children of multi cultural family' conducted by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology revealed that entrance rate of children of multi cultural family to middle school or high school was low which was attributed to the fact that many children of multi cultural family dropped out of school because they had a great difficulty in adapting themselves to school life due to cultural and language barriers and alienation. If this problem is not solved properly, serious youth problems such as delinquency and violence can arise.
In this situation, proving music education aimed to promote the understanding of cultural diversity can help members of multi cultural family to understand each other better and form a close tie between them.
This study aims to present a systematic teaching method of music that enables the children of multi cultural family to learn about diverse cultures and music by making good use of play songs.
