The city we are currently living in suffers from complicated problems that include environment degradation caused by industrialization and rapid changes in urban areas and the resultant occurrence of idle spaces. We now know that a sustainable city can be achieved through the enhancement of living qualities through cultural exchanges and not through reckless development. The potentiality of a city can be materialized through a variety of exchanges based on eco-friendly perspectives.
The 21st century requires various kinds of cultural spaces in order to develop sustainable urban spaces. Cultural contents have converted from physical objects of the past to cultural elements that can be experienced through the intangible such as experience, attraction and empathy, and sharing and exchanges by people. In contemporary society, the pattern of cultural consumption is changing toward requesting cultural information through participation as people?s qualities of lives have become enhanced. They are directly taking part in the process of production and consumption, creating cultural contents by themselves, and are eager to share with others. As there is an increasing demand of cultural spaces in people?s daily lives, it is now vital to provide the space for direct participation and cultural exchanges, not just limited to the existing concept of cultural space that only offers indirect experience.
This study suggests how to vitalize urban culture by regenerating idle spaces. The participatory free market is a suggestion for using abandoned and neglected spaces for cultural contents of the contemporary society. The study for cultural regeneration of idle urban spaces is important as it will be an opportunity to reconsider the value of recklessly developed city areas, and to recreate the relationship among city culture, human and environment.
Cultural regeneration of idle space offers a chance to enrich the quality of life, and it fulfills the social needs for culture to extend to our daily space. The participatory free market that induces experiential value through being a part of it is a new approach for understanding and analyzing the urban culture and the consumer patterns of the West.
This study will review the methods behind actively developing city culture by regenerating idle spaces as cultural hubs, and what values people will experience in such spaces. The free market, as one of the regeneration projects, is a participatory urban culture program, which aims to encourage people?s participation and interest even from the early stages.
The Free Market, different from a flea market, is a creative space where various kinds of cultures co-exist to promote cultural experiences through active participation. This study will observe and analyze the Free Market?s program based on physical and cultural elements of free markets in Korea and abroad as well as experiential characteristics. Based on such analysis, values of the free market can be summarized into five categories; Creative Space, Recreation, Identity, Culture, and Education.
Through this value analysis, the study concludes that people are not just satisfied by simple observation of culture, but tend to gain more by directly experiencing and sharing cultural programs as they fulfill both education and play factors.
Based on the above five values, this study suggests a developed concept for the participatory free market by naming it as Play Market that offers a more active experience. The play market is a cultural space that encourages people?s participation and exchanges. It also compensates the shortcomings of the free market that requires the expertise of participants. Thus, a standardization of the guideline is necessary to allow all participants to easily suggest and program a play market. The Play Market?s design guideline will consist of different sections such as the Play Ground, the Player, the Play Service, and the Play Contents, and its terminology will be easy to understand, and surpass the existing design guidelines of Korea that are complicated and full of difficult terminologies.
The standard design guideline for the play market, suggested in this study, will be a suggestion for offering active experience within urban culture. It will inspire people?s participation for establishing future urban culture, and to produce participatory cultural contents that are needed in contemporary society following the reckless city development of the past.
