In order to prevent the damage of cultural heritage in accordance with land development and industrialization, about a thousand of excavation researches of buried cultural properties have been progressed nationally in a year. Excavated cultural heritage basically belongs to the nation. Thus the excavation research which investigates cultural heritage assumes publicness as the records created in the process of the excavation research should be managed systematically. After the excavation research is done, however, the only thing which is submitted and managed by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea is the excavation research report. This study started from a sense of purpose which was that systematic management of the excavation research records was important to secure transparency and credibility of the excavation research. For this, we looked at the process of how the excavation research records were produced as understanding how the produced records were managed. Based on the researched current status and problems, we aimed to suggest the record management measures suitable for the characteristics of buried cultural properties and excavation research.
In order to manage the excavation research records systematically, the role of the excavation research institutions which produce the records is more important than anything. The systematic and administrational supports of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea should be followed as well.
