The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mother's psychological control and behavioral control on young children's problem behaviors according to their age. The subjects of this study were 238 mothers whose young children were 3 and 5-years-old and attending to 2 private kindergartens and 4 child-care centers located in Chunan and Ansung. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Primary factor analysis, Cronbach's α, t-test, Pearson's correlation, hierarchical regression using SPSS 12.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there was a significant difference in problem behaviors according to young children's sex. That is, boy's waning attention were higher than that of girls. Also, there was a significant difference in mother's psychological control according to young children's age. That is, psychological control of mothers who had 5-years-old children was higher than that of those who had 3-years-old children.
Second, it was found that both psychological control and behavioral control had significant effects on the aggression of 3-years-old children, while only psychological control had a significant effect on the aggression of 5-years-old children. Also, mother's psychological control and behavioral control had stronger effects on aggression of 3-years-old children than that of 5-years-old children.
Third, it showed that mother's psychological control had a significant effect on waning attention of both 3-years-old and 5-years-old children. It also appeared that mother's psychological control had stronger effect on waning attention of 3-years-old than that of 5-years-old children.
Fourth, it indicated that mother's psychological control had a significant effect on depression and anxiety of both 3-years-old and 5-years-old children. Mother's psychological control had stronger effect on depression and anxiety of 3-years-old children than that of 5-years-old children. Especially as for 5-years-old children, the interaction effect of mother's psychological control and behavioral control was significant for depression and anxiety.
Fifth, it indicated that mother's psychological control and behavioral control had significant effects on withdrawal of both 3-years-old and 5-years-old children. Also, mother's psychological control and behavioral control had stronger effects on withdrawal of 3-years-old children than that of 5-years-old children. The interaction effect of mother's psychological control and behavioral control was significant for only 3-year-old children's withdrawal.
Sixth, it was found that mother's psychological control had a significant effect on fear of 3-years-old children, while both mother's psychological control and behavioral control had significant effects on fear of 5-years-old children.
