The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of mother's family-of-origin differentiation and psychological characteristics on parenting behaviors through the theoretical model proposed on the basis of the literature review. Subjects of this study were 428 mothers of young children aged 3-6, attending to public kindergartens located in Cheongju city, Youngdong-gun, and Jinchun-gun. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's α, t-test, Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient, and path analysis through using AMOS 7.0.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there was a statistically significant difference in mother's family-of-origin differentiation according to children's age, and mother's and father's educational level.
Second, there was a statistically significant difference in emotional cognitive function of psychological characteristics according to mother's age.
Third, there was difference in mother's parenting behavior according to children's age.
Fourth, mother's ego-integrity had a direct effect on mother's parenting behavior for boys while mother's emotional-cognitive function did it for girls.
Fifth, family projection and emotional cut-off as family-of- differentiation had direct effects on mother's emotional-cognitive function, and mother's ego-integrity was influenced by family regression as family-of- differentiation
Sixth, mother's parenting behavior for boys was influenced family projection and family regression as family-of- differentiation. Family regression as family-of- differentiation had a direct effect on mother's parenting behavior for girls.
Seventh, mother's emotional-cognitive function had a mediating effect on mother's parenting behavior for boys by family projection and regression. Also, mother's psychological characteristics such as emotional-cognitive function and ego-integrity did not have a mediating effect.
