This study aimed at examining the effects of elementary school students' participation in school sports club activities on the development of their social skills through analyzing and looking into the relationship between students' level of participation in the club activities and the factors of social skills (law abidance, cooperation, independence and sociability).
To this end, a survey was conducted involving 726 students from seven elementary schools in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Ver. 17.0. In order to find out the casual relationships among variables, t-test and one-way analysis of variance were performed. Each hypothesis was verified at the significance level of 5% (P = 0.05). The results were summarized as follows.
First, whether or not elementary school students' participation in school sports club activities had any effects on the development of their social skills was analyzed. According to the results, the students participating in the club activities were found to be more significantly affected in all of the sub-areas of social skills than those not participating. The analysis depending on gender showed significant differences only in the area of sociability.
Second, the effects of the students' participation in the club activities on the development of their social skills were analyzed depending on the duration of their participation. The result showed that the students showed no statistically significant differences in all of the areas of social skills depending on the participation duration.
Third, the effects of the students' participation in the club activities on the development of their social skills were analyzed depending on the frequency of their participation. The result displayed no statistically significant differences in all of the areas of social skills depending of the perspiration frequency.
Finally, the effects of the students' participation in the club activities on the development of their social skills were analyzed depending on the participation time of their each participation day. According to the result, the participation time was found to have statistically significant effect on the development of the students' cooperation.
