The purpose of this study is to select the factors related with juvenile's internet addition in the entire environment including juvenile from the ecological viewpoint and define the effect of each factor on juvenile's internet addiction. The study model was organized by classifying depression and self-control as the subfactor to predict juvenile's internet addiction and defining demographic factor, individual factor, home environment factor and school environment factor as independent variables. With the study model, the study considered the effect of ecological system factor on internet addiction.
For the study, data were collected from 1,000 male & female juveniles registered in the middle schools located in Cheongju City. Total 1000 question papers were distributed. Excluding the papers containing a lot of unanswered questions or unfaithfully answered questions, final 932 question papers were used for analysis.
For collected data processing and result analysis, SPSS/WIN 12.0 was used. Descriptive analysis was used to grasp demographic characteristics of study targets, degree of each systematic factor and degree of internet addiction. In addition, T-Test, F verification and Duncan (post hoc test) were performed to analyze the degree of internet addiction depending on demographic characteristic of study target. Correlation analysis and simple regression analysis were performed to analyze the effects of individual factor and environment factor on depression and self-control. Correlation between internet addiction and each factor was verified through multiple regression analysis.
The analysis results depending on demographic factor are as follows.
First, for gender, among the subfactors of juvenile's internet addiction, depression of female juvenile was higher than that of male juvenile and there was no difference in self-control between male and female juvenile.
Second, it was found that as score was high, there was low risk of internet addiction and vice versa.
Third, there was no difference in the score of depression depending on the survival of parents but for the score of self-control, the score of case that both parents were alive was higher than the score of case that both parents were not alive. The score of case that there was mother-in-law or father-in-law was highest.
Fourth, among the subfactors of juvenile's internet addiction, there was no difference in depression depending on academic backgrounds of parents but self-control was high when academic backgrounds of parents were high so the academic backgrounds of parents were significant for juvenile's internet addiction.
Fifth, the score of depression was low and the score of self-control was high when economic levels of parents were high so the economic level of home was significant for juvenile's internet addiction.
The effects of ecological system factors on juveniles internet addiction are as follows.
First, the individual factors, self-respect and self-efficacy gave significant effects on the subfactors of internet addiction, depression and self-control. As self-respect and self-efficacy were high, depression was low and self-control was high. In other words, as the individual factors, self-respect and self-efficacy, were high, the risk of juvenile's internet addiction was low.
Second, it was found that home environment factor gave significant effect on juvenile's entire internet addiction. When considering it by subfactors, depression was low and self-control was high when the score of home environment factor was high. In other words, the risk of internet addiction was low when parent's nurturing attitude, communication between parent and child and parent's support were high.
Third, school environment factor gave significant effect on juvenile's entire internet addiction. When considering it by subfactors, it was found that depression was affected by the support of friend or teacher and when it was high, depression was low. Self control was affected by the support of friend or teacher among school environment factors. As the support of friend or teacher was high, self-control was high. Therefore, when the school environment factor, the support of friend or teacher was high, the risk of internet addiction was low.
The study result revealed that all the ecological system factors such as individual factor(self-respect and self-efficacy), home environment factor(parent's nurturing attitude, communication between parent and child and parent's support) and school environment factor(friend's support and teacher's support) gave effects to the subfactors of internet addiction, 'depression' and 'self-control' resulting in giving effect to juvenile's internet addiction.
As shown in the analysis result. it was found that various factors of ecological system gave effects on internet addiction. Therefore, the linear role of one system is not sufficient for preventing juvenile's internet addiction. Synthetic intervention shall be performed by constructing organic network between all systems.
It is possible to form juvenile's sound internet habit and prevent internet addiction by performing the program to increase juvenile's self-respect and self-efficacy, developing various programs to support family system and expanding the support of friend and teacher.
