This study is a basic research for designing Korean language education curriculum by analyzing characteristics and requirements of Korean language education for the migrant workers and suggesting an example curriculum of Korean language education for the Migrant Support Center.
The methodologies, which are used in this study, are the library research and structured quantitative survey. As a result of the library research, the Korean language education curriculum for the migrant workers is classified in three categories by the migration timeline, which are ‘before-migration’, ‘before-employment’ and ‘during-employment’, and the education program for the ‘during- employment’ category is compared with the regular one. With the requirements which are derived from the precedent research on Korean language education curriculum, the survey was carried out to the teachers and students at the Migrant Support Center. The survey shows that the language proficiency level of the students, topics and contents of the class and time plan for the class are the important factors for designing Korean language education curriculum at the Migrant Support Center.
Based on these researches, the following guidelines for the Korean language education curriculum are suggested.
1) The goal of Korean language education for the migrant workers is for general purpose to support both occupational and daily life not only focuses on occupational one.
2) The supplementary materials, such as multi-lingual task manual by work type, multi-lingual information book for the living, sentence pattern book and vocabulary book, have to be developed to support the occupational life for the migrant workers.
3) The level of language proficiency of the learners has to be targeted ‘intermediate’ which allows the students to communicate without other’s assist.
4) The education curriculum has to be designed for the learners to keep studying on their own initiatives
Finally, an example curriculum for Korean language education is proposed based on the findings and suggestions in this study.
