This study verifies the effect exerted upon the level of psychological satisfaction, capacity for physical expression, and communication of children and youths by an educational program for Korean dance. As such, it can be said that the necessity of this study is found in that a variety of educational programs for Korean dance can be developed and applied on the field based on its results.
This study seeks to examine first, the issue of whether an educational program for Korean dance has educational effect upon multi-cultural children and youths and second, what differences there are in terms of educational effect upon multi-cultural children and youths according to the repertoire (Mask dance and So-go dance program) of Korean dance.
As part of a procedure to develop a theoretical basis for the study, it has considered different literature. Also, the author has visited institutions specializing in multi-cultural education and conducted detailed interview with professional educators, parents, and multi-cultural children. After the interview, the study has secured a measurement tool based on the details of the interview, the research theme that has been set, and the educational objective. Afterwards, the program was configured via a meeting of specialists. Finally, the study analyzed the results of research.
For this study, a total of 22 multi-cultural children and youths living in Seoul and Gyeonggido were randomly assigned to two groups, 11 each. A Mask dance program made up of 6 sets was applied to group A, and a So-go dance program made up of 6 sets was applied to group B. To verify the educational effect of the program, this study has used open ended questionnaire, effort measuring sheet, and AIPE-S test sheet as tools of measurement and measured the level of psychological satisfaction, capacity for physical expression, and change to communication for each.
As a result of the study, it was found that the educational program for Korean dance exerted influence upon the level of psychological contentment, capacity for physical representation, and communication of multi-cultural children and youths and that there were differences according to the repertoire of Korean dance.
In terms of the level of psychological contentment for the program, the result shows that the level of demand and contentment for the dance increased but that there was a difference according to the difficulty level of the two programs.
In terms of the capacity for physical expression as measured by the effort measuring sheet, it was commonly found that it changed due to the characteristics of Korean dance and that it changed differently according to the characteristics of the repertoire.
Last, as a result of measuring communication that was observed during class time via AIPE-S, it was found that frequency of communication with the teacher increased for both groups. By contrast, in respect to communication among classmates, there was an increase for A and a decrease for B. The study finds that this is due to the difference of concentration level caused by the level of difficulty of dance task per repertoire.
This study has verified that there was a positive educational result for the level of psychological satisfaction, capacity for physical representation, and communication of both groups which are composed of multi-cultural children and youths after applying the educational program for Korean dance. Also, the study found that they were influenced by the program repertoire.
There is an increase in interest for dance education as an effective educational method for multi-cultural children as well as in enlargement in its application. Still, the reality is that there has not been an adequate examination of what effects such a dance education had. As such, it is believed that this study will help diversify educational method for multi-cultural children and youths, because it has verified the educational effects of Korean dance program. Moreover, this study finds that such efforts for multi-cultural education will provide an opportunity for multi-cultural children and youths to settle in the society and to develop their potential.
