국내 연등축제 현황 및 불교문화행사 발전방안 연구 = Current Status of Korean lotus lantern festival and research for development plan of Buddhist cultural event

Buddhism is inherited as a part of traditional culture in modern society and became the culture in which takes refuge, to common people who are tired in competition and material centered life.
Buddhism has succeed to representative religion in Korea with a numerous cultural heritage for a long time. With corresponding to this periodic flowing, it is very natural condition to popularize a various buddhist culture and introduce it to people. A culture is not isolated alone, but change and repeat a creation and disappearance with other cultures. That is, a culture can re-create itself in the process in which the culture contacts with other cultures.
In this respect, the lotus lantern festival, carrying on the commemoration of Buddha's birthday in the Korean Buddhism, is the most successful axis of the Buddhist culture.
Lotus lantern festival has been handed down from the period of the Three Kingdoms, installed Yeondeungdogam and performed as a national event in the era of Goryeo state. Lotus lantern festival changed a popular folk customs and prevailed as a populace in the time of Joseon state.
Modern lotus lantern festival is not limited in the religious character of Buddhism but settled down as Korean traditional culture, then is executed as a national festival.
Lotus lantern festival is counted with the finest contents for recognizing our culture to the world.
The questionnaire was investigated to the foreigners who participated in the lotus lantern festival of 2008. It is known that 78.7% of participants recognized in advance and participated the festival. It shows that the lotus lantern festival already became the festival which is celebrated among cosmopolite. Therefore, the success of the lotus lantern festival leads to a possibility of advanced direction where the Buddhist cultural event is more development.
The Buddhist cultural event should be changed within a new modern frame. In this thesis, I would like to study a developmental direction of Buddhist cultural event.
Firstly, the Buddhist cultural event should be an event of open space. The Buddhist cultural event is not an event but a festival.
The purpose of Buddhist cultural event should not be a `religious service. The event should be a space for not only Buddhist but also non-Buddhist.
Therefore, the Buddhist cultural event should be performed the contents in which non-Buddhist can enjoy the festival. Then, the festival can develop from an event to the genuine festival.
Secondly, the Buddhist cultural event should be executed as a space of participation. The Buddhist cultural yard of the lotus lantern festival is an important example as a space of participation.
The citizens contact Buddhism as one culture in the daily central city rather than contact with a religion. Therefore, the Buddhist cultural event can be good contents which can erase the reject of non-Buddhist and can induce the curiosity and interest of people.
Thirdly, it's the planing of Buddhist cultural event through the harmony of spontaneity and organizing power. It may be the line which is managed by spontaneity, however it needs to have the organizing power of line so that citizens whom watches by the street can know the introduction, development, turn, and conclusion, four steps in composition easily. That means the action of the starting group and the action of the finishing group should be different. Not only comparing things like the size, magnificence, meagerness but also everybody should have their own role so participation itself can be the joy.
Fourthly, it's the expanding the contents of Buddhist cultural event. This means developing more buddhist characters and merchandise, expand meaning of use of space. There are not much commercial parts in Buddhism. So if these commercial parts can be developed with Buddhist cultural event, it can become a symbol to participants for remembering the event. Also when it comes to use of space lotus lantern festival takes lots of space and if we could maximize the value of the use, these festival can be established to the bigger ones.
Fifthly, expanding the publicity. To expand the participation and to establish the Buddhist cultural event to a bigger one, it needs to have more active and lively publicity. Through these kinds of active publicity, Buddhist cultural event will become better with more participation.
The lotus lantern festival which is enforced these days should get out of the complex of too Buddhist and amateur. Festival is an event that everyone enjoys. So rather than having impression that comes from pertness and professionalism, it should have bustle and diversity which make the festival more attracting. You can find this out through the festival of lotus lantern which is the most successful event of Buddhist cultural events.
The citizen's participation in the lotus lantern festival is getting bigger and bigger. Not only in Seoul but in many other regions, many people are participating in the lotus lantern festival because of its effective use of space and its plan of national wide. Through this fact we can found out this event is becoming worldwide festival. If we could apply the lotus lantern festival know-hows, like how to make more people participate, to other Buddhist festival, the future of korean Buddhist cultural festival will be very bright.
