구조적 가족치료모델을 적용한 “기러기가족”의 문제에 대한 질적 사례연구 : 캐나다 밴쿠버 거주 한국 모자녀 가족을 중심으로 = Qualitative Case Study on the Problems of ""Wild Geese Family“ Applied by Structural Family Therapy Model:Focusing on Korean Mothers and Children Living in Vancouver, Canada

This study starts from the awareness of problems lacking of psychological services in terms of social dimension and access in terms of academic dimension despite the reality where wild geese family that is one of forms in separated living family is increasing and problems get serious after IMF. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data when wild geese family comes to the site for family therapy. To do this, It was intended to conduct the analysis and interpretation on problems of wild geese family by applying structural family therapy model as a family therapy model that represents the more clear and simple concepts of structure of wild geese family.
This study used qualitative case study method that was suitable to have a specific and systematic perspective about family structure of wild geese family. All seven wild geese family members participated in this study and mothers in wild geese family living in Vancouver, Canada were interviewed in depth from March 2010 to May 2010 in order to conduct in-depth analysis of the process of families of wild geese family. Subjects of this study were confined only to mothers living in Canada who had a primary purpose to educate children, and this limitation was based on the purpose of this study to analyze structurally the appearance of family living as wild geese family with purpose to educate children.
Conclusions of this study to deal with problems of wild geese family by applying structural family therapy model are as follows.
First, a wild geese family looked like making a decision to live separately for a long time with educational purposes, but in fact family issues beside children education accounted for most of actual causes. In other words, when the relationship between couples was deteriorated, or estranged, this separately living was selected as alternative ways to defer or avoid divorce. And when there were severe conflicts between parent and children, children got out of their father or when a mother wanted to get out of her husband or his family, she lived separately with her children. This study demonstrated the behind context of wild geese family relationships and the contextual approach affecting current relationships of wild geese family. This study also revealed that various behind reasons were in wild geese family themselves during decision-making process for wild geese family.
Second, when we examined the changes in family relationships from when they started to live as wild geese family, prominent weakness of the spouse subsystem was shown. Especially they didn’t play a role as emotional supporters, but play a role as parent subsystem. Therefore, serious family subsystem was shown as if the family system was thought to be lost or destroyed. In addition, this study revealed the current shape of couples in wild geese family where a husband was existed as a financial supporter and a wife was existed without any roles. This relationships between couples suggested that couples needed more time to be adaptive upon reunion of wild geese family. Additionally, in terms of relationship between parents and children, relationship between father and children got estranged and relationship between mother and children got more closely.
Third, the wild geese family was initially maladjusted, since they couldn’t find an alternative way. They went through a stage of resistance against changes once they found an adaptive alternative one soon. The phenomenon of idealization of father functioned as a symbolic person in the family. As the independence in private system of geese mother also increased, it was shown to be similar pattern of parent in single-parent family. As spouse subsystem got weaker, the couple was loosing interest in other’s life. Finally, this study demonstrated that geese mother-oriented parent subsystem functioned instead of functioning as parent subsystem where parents functioned equally, and relationships between mother and children got much closer.
This study can be very meaningful to provide information to be applied in the field of family therapy in the future, and to be used for assessment. It provided detailed and various information on wild geese family shown in the process of family by examining the process of changes in wild geese family very closely. Finally, this study is also meaningful to provide clues to look at wild geese family with more systematic and analytical aspects by applying structural family therapy model upon the approach to problems of wild geese family.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 IMF 이후 장기분거가족의 하나인 기러기가족이 증가하고 그 문제점이 심각화 되는 현실에도 불구하고, 이에 대한 사회적 차원에서의 심리서비스 제공과 학문적 차원에서의 접근이 부족하다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이에 본 연구는 기러기가족이 가족치료 현장에 왔을 때, 그들에 대한 기초자료 제공을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 기러기가족의 구조를 보다 명료하고 단순한 개념으로 나타낼 수 있는 가족치료모델로서 구조적 가족치료모델을 적용하여 기러기가족의 문제에 대한 분석과 해석을 실시하고자 한다.
본 연구는 기러기가족의 가족구조에 대해 구체적이며 체계적인 시각을 갖기에 적합한 질적 사례연구방법을 사용하였다. 연구에 참여한 기러기가족은 모두 7명이며 기러기가족의 가족과정을 심층적으로 분석하기 위해 캐나다 밴쿠버에 거주중인 기러기어머니를 대상으로 2010년 3월부터 5월까지 심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구 참여자는 자녀교육에 일차적인 목적으로 두고 캐나다에서 기러기가족 생활을 하는 어머니로 한정하였고, 이는 자녀교육을 목적으로 기러기가족 생활을 하는 가족의 모습을 구조적으로 분석하고자 하는 본 연구의 목적에 근거한다.
구조적 가족치료모델을 적용하여 기러기가족의 문제를 다룬 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 기러기가족은 표면적으로 자녀교육을 목적으로 장기분거를 결정하는 것처럼 보이나, 실제로는 자녀교육 외에도 가족관계 내에서의 문제점이 실제로는 많은 부분을 차지한다. 즉, 부부관계가 악화 지경에 있었을 때, 또는 소원한 관계에 있을 때 이혼을 유보하거나 혹은 회피하기 위한 방법으로서 선택한 경우가 있었다. 그리고 부모자녀간의 갈등이 심했던 경우 자녀가 아버지를 피해서 온 경우, 남편이나 시댁이라는 하나의 울타리에서 벗어나고 싶어서 기러기 엄마가 자녀를 데리고 떠나온 경우가 있었다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서는 기러기가족의 이면에 숨겨진 가족관계의 맥락을 확인할 수 있었으며, 그 맥락적 접근이 기러기가족 현재의 가족관계의 변화에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 그리고 기러기가족의 결정 과정에 숨겨진 다양한 이유들이 그들 기러기가족에게 있었다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 기러기가족 생활 시작을 기점으로 가족관계의 변화를 살펴보면, 부부하위체계의 두드러진 약화가 나타난다. 특히 정서적 지지자로서 전혀 기능하지 못하고 부모하위체계로서만 기능하는 체계의 상실 내지는 소멸이라고 해석할 수 있을 정도의 심각한 가족하위체계를 나타낸다. 또한 오직 경제적 지원자로서만 존재하는 남편과 역할을 상실한 채 존재하는 아내의 모습이 우리가 당면하고 있는 기러기가족 부부의 현주소라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이것은 추후 이러한 부부관계가 기러기가족의 가족 합류시에는 부부관계를 재정립하는데 적응적 시간이 더욱 요구되게 하는 원인적 역할을 할 것이라는 것을 짐작하게 한다. 또한 기러기가족의 부모자녀관계을 살펴보았을 때는 기러기가족은 점차 부자녀관계가 소원해지면서 모자녀관계가 밀착되어지는 관계를 보였다.
셋째, 기러기가족은 초기에는 기러기가족 생활에 대처양식을 찾지 못해 부적응하다가 곧 가족이 적응적 대안을 찾아 변화에 저항하는 단계를 거친다. 그리고 가족 내에서 상징적인 존재로서 기능하는 아버지의 이상화 현상이 있다. 또한 기러기엄마 개인체계의 독립성이 증대되면서 한부모가족의 부모와 유사한 패턴을 가지는 것으로 나타났으며 부부하위체계가 점차 약화하면서 부부가 서로의 삶에 관심이 사라져가는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 기러기가족에게서는 부모가 동일하게 기능하는 부모하위체계가 아닌, 기러기엄마 중심의 부모하위체계로 기능하는 것과 특히 모자녀간 밀착된 관계의 양상을 확인할 수 있었다.
본 연구는 추후 가족치료 현장에서 적용 가능한, 그리고 사정 자료로 사용 가능한 기러기가족에 대한 정보를 제공하였다는 점에서 의미 있는 연구가 될 수 있을 것이다. 기러기가족의 변화과정을 상세하게 살펴봄으로써, 가족과정에서 나타나는 세부적이고 다양한 기러기가족의 모습을 제공 하였다. 마지막으로 기러기가족의 문제를 접근하는데 있어 구조적 가족치료모델을 적용하여 기러기가족을 좀 더 체계적이며 분석적 관점에서 볼 수 있는 단서를 제공했다는 점에서도 의의가 있다.
