This study aims to analyse the Korean resources used for Korean language education for missionary kids, which highlights the problem in educating the missionaries’kids with Korean language and culture in the present situation. In Addition, the need for developing the textbooks in order to enhance the effectiveness of the Korean language and culture has been taken into consideration and the directions of improving these textbooks have also been studied.
Most of the studies on missionaries’kids have been conducted through the Bible Colleges so far and recently, the interest in Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is increasing. As of yet, a specific study addressing the Missionary Kids (MKs) has not been conducted in any Korean education scheme. There is also an ongoing discussion about the importance of Korean language and culture education for the MKs focussed on a specific Mission agency.
Consequently, in this research containing the background research about western TCKs, the current status of the Korean MKs’was investigated, who within their characteristics show as TCKs. Furthermore, various procedures were examined: a survey on the experience of Korean language and culture of MKs an analysis of the Korean language resources designed for MKs and the current status of the Korean language education focussing on the MKs in the missionary field as well as the training required for MKs’ educators.
Based on these, the aims, directions, content, and methods of the Korean language and culture education for Korean MKs have been carried out, as well as the teaching method that can be used in a real class situation have been suggested.
The limitations of this research include the limited numbers of similar previous studies, and the number of available MKs for survey to increase the collective data. Additionally, due to the fact that this research was based on MKs of all backgrounds, a follow-up research would be required to support the various results ensuing from the different methods of approach.
Nevertheless, the current status of Korean language and culture education for MKs which has not been explored before by the Korean education system was investigated, and its significance is focussed on the effort to carry out an effective educational system for the Christians, Koreans and the wider International society.
