The objective of this study was to examine the effects of a university student mentoring program on low‐income elementary school children’s school adjustment. For this purpose, we hypothesized that there would be no difference in school adjustment between the experimental group who participated in the university student mentoring program and the control group who did not and between before and after the application of the program, in order to test the hypotheses, we sampled 40 fifth and sixth graders of low‐income families from 5 elementary schools in Incheon Metropolitan City and divided them into the experimental group (n=20) participating in the mentoring program and the control group (n=20) not participating.
The experimental group children participated in the university student mentoring program for 10 weeks from Week 2 of April to Week 3 of June, and the control group did not participate. In order to test the effects of the university student mentoring program, we measured the children using an existing school adjustment test with proved reliability. The experiment tested the effects of the program based on the pretest‐posttest control group design.
According to the results of the pretest on school adjustment, the two groups were not significantly different, so they were found to be homogenous. In addition, after the experimental group completed the university student mentoring program, the two groups had a posttest in order to see the effects of the program. The results of the tests were analyzed through t‐test using SPSSWIN, and the significance level was set to 5%.
The results obtained from this study are as follows.
First, in the results of comparing school adjustment between the experimental group who participated in the university student mentoring program and the control group who did not, highly significant difference was observed in overall school adjustment (p<.01) and in peer relation (p<.01), school class (p<.05) and school rule (p<.05) among the sub‐factors of school adjustment, so the null hypothesis was rejected and the university student mentoring program was proved to have a positive effect on school adjustment.
Second, in the results of comparing school adjustment between before and after the application of the program, highly significant difference was observed in overall school adjustment (p<.01) and in peer relation (p<.05), teacher relation (p<.01), school class (p<.01) and school rule (p<.01) among the sub‐factors of school adjustment, so the null hypothesis was rejected and the university student mentoring program was proved to have a positive effect on school adjustment.
Accordingly, it is concluded that a university student mentoring program for low‐income elementary school children is positive and effective for the children’s school adjustment and particularly effective in improving their adjustment to peer relations, school classes and school rules.
Based on the results of this study, we make suggestions as follows for further research on university student mentoring programs and effective application of such programs in the field of education for low‐income elementary school children’s school adjustment.
First, further research is required to develop more diverse mentoring programs in consideration of children’s characteristics.
Second, as this study was limited to a questionnaire survey, further research is required in which the researcher participates in the mentoring program and conducts closer examinations.
Third, in order to provide low‐income elementary school children with desirable educational environment, further research should be conducted on the effects of such programs on their cognitive and affective domains.
