This study aims at understanding characteristics of urban ecosystem environment and estimating ecological index based on those characteristics. The research area was Changwon City in Kyeongsangnam Province where natural environment had been well preserved but had been gone through a lot of development recently. This study was conducted in four steps: First present situation of urban ecosystem, second assessment of characteristics of urban ecosystem, third estimation of ecological index and fourth Prediction of integrated Changwon City's total ecological index.
Assessment of characteristics of urban ecosystem included a plant, animal, hydrologic cycle, atmospheric circulation and energy that are indicators of eco-city plan. As for a plant ecosystem, health and abundance were assessed, connectivity and habitat environment for the animal ecosystem and surface runoff, evapotranspiration, infiltration and storage were evaluated. As for a atmospheric circulation, cold air productivity, movement and retention were assessed, consumption and availability were evaluated for energy ecosystem. Then, the assessment was used to 5m×5m grid type of the city.
