This paper discusses about expression types of liquor advertisements in Korea after a remarkable change in 2006 at the field, as well as investigates consumer recognition of these advertisements. Among alcohol advertisements from 2006 to the first half of 2010, particularly of Soju, beer and whiskey, 117 advertisements were selected for this analysis. We analyze them into their contents as types of advertising appeal, copy and visual. The survey was conducted for investigating consumer recognitions of these alcohol advertisements.
The research focuses on which type of advertising appeal is used in alcohol advertisements, which type of advertising copy is used in alcohol advertisements, which type of visual factor is used in alcohol advertisements, how alcohol consumers recognize these alcohol advertisements, how consumer's attitude-towards-advertising would affect their alcohol consumption intention, how consumers recognize commercial featuring models and their character in alcohol advertisements, how the recognition would affect alcohol consumption intention.
The results of this study indicate that each type of advertising depends on types of alcoholic beverages and target consumer. In case of Soju advertisements, these tend to target male consumers than female consumers, focusing on visual factors and featuring models. Beer advertisements appeal to all consumers regardless of age or gender and symbolize the concept of freedom, passion and youthfulness. Whiskey advertisements are rather being produced to construct reliability and security for their products, than targeting intended consumer. For this reason, recent whiskey advertising companies employ commercial featuring models who have social credibility, to gain consumer trust for their products.
From the analysis of consumer's attitude-towards-advertising and consumption intention, we perceive that Soju advertisements have to improve in some parts and that beer advertisements are performing well compared to the others. Whiskey advertisements still require to improving in most parts. The result of this study signifies that we have conducted an empirical study of consumers’ needs and showed proposals, at this heating moment of alcohol advertising field.
However, there are a few limitations in the research. First, although public interest in traditional alcohol has become higher today, targets of this study are limited to Soju, beer and whiskey. Second, research data from beer and whiskey advertisements are not enough to complicate the study, whereas the data from Soju advertisements are fully adequate for the analysis. Third, the research has been conducted using the survey data only. Thus, we need to explore with another mode of data collection for further research. Fourth, there is a potential of hasty generalization in the result of analysis which targeted intended consumers in some areas.
This study focuses on Soju advertisements produced vigorously in the current field, as well as proposes to eliminate the above mentioned limitations to complicate the research.
