Large-scale accidents by disaster have been increased day by day as mankind has been developed, which has allowed professional jobs to be made. A representative job out of them is ‘firefighting’.
In the past, the conceptof firefighting was prevention and extinguishing of fire. However, in the present, response to diverse accidents including traffic accident, safety accident, meteorological disaster and natural disasteris included in the concept of firefighting. It has been changed in complicated and diverse forms.
Such an increase and expansion of potential demand for fire are causing an increase in firefighting activity necessarily. In such conditions, firefighters are exposed to more complicated and diverse dangers, which caused excessive job stress by heavy and complicated business. It has an effect on firefighters’ job loyalty.
According to Ellyson and Gells’research, it is analyzed that stress of shift workers including firefighters is extremely higher than any other job.
Consequently, in such reality, job stress of members of an organization gives trouble to them in achieving a target of their organization. It means that job stress has a negative effect on job loyalty by making development and growth of each member stopped.
Generally normal people are stressed by their family’s suffering from death, disease and accident. However, most of firefighters are stressed by shocking scenes in the field of disaster, fear from their colleagues’ death and injury and mental tension on rushed out immediately. Especially, fire field, suicide accident and large-scale traffic accident experienced at their workplace than their household have a direct effect on their job stress.
Such job stress of firefighters has a negative effect on their job loyalty by making them have a severe unbalance mentally and physically.
Therefore, the purpose of the study was to make working conditions to meet national people’s demand for welfare and to increase firefighter’s specialty by disclosing differences between job stress followed by firefighters’working environment and their job loyalty, making a close inquiry into an effect of job stress on job loyalty and offering ground data required to improving firefighters’ working conditions and job environment.
