The purpose of this study is to provide injury prevention and to correct rehabilitation methods for Ssirum players by examining and analyzing the sports injuries that occur during the training and competition of adult Ssirum players.
For this study, 154 Ssirum players (50 business team players, 104 university team players) were recruited and a survey about sports injury, sports rehabilitation and reinjury was conducted. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 18.0 with using frequency analysis and χ² (chi-square) test and the results were as follow.
First, in the sports injury and rehabilitation characteristics according to Ssirum weight class, there were many knee injuries in the middleweight class and the heavyweight class, however, there were many back injuries in the lightweight class. In regards to the type of sports injuries, there were many muscle/ligament/tendon rupture injuries in every weight class. The participants of the survey said they are the first person who treats the occurred injury as for the main person who treats the occurred injury, and they use ice pack as the first treatment for the injury, and they go to the hospital for treatment as for the injury treatment method. As for the period of injury treatment, there were many responses of 1~2 weeks in every weight class and those in the heavyweight class practiced the most rehabilitation exercises after treating the injury. In regards to the main rehabilitation exercise therapy, they practiced muscle strengthening exercise, and they returned to training upon 70~80% of recovery in every weight class except for the lightweight class in regards to the period of returning to training. In addition, those in the middleweight and heavyweight class experienced reinjuries more than those in the lightweight class in regards to reinjury experience. As for the frequency of reinjury among the players who experienced reinjury, there were many players who experienced reinjury twice. In regards to the decision on returning to training, the participants said they themselves make the decision.
Second, in the sports injury and rehabilitation characteristics according to the player experiences, there were many back injuries for the players with less than 10 years of experience, and there were many knee injuries for the players with over 10 years of experience. As for the type of sports injury, the number of muscle/ligament/tendon rupture injuries was the highest in every type of experience. In regards to the main person who treats the occurred injury, the number of response was the highest in every group for those who said they themselves treat the injury, and they said they use ice pack as the first treatment for the injury, and go to the hospital for treatment as for the injury treatment method. The injury treatment period was 1~2 weeks in every group and it was found that the players with 10~13 years of experience practice the most rehabilitation exercise after treating the injury. As for the main rehabilitation method, they practiced the most muscle strengthening exercise, and the participants said they returned to training upon 70~80% of recovery in every group except for the players with less than 10 years of experience in regards to the period of returning to training. In addition, those with less than 13 years of experience experienced reinjuries much more than those with more than 13 years of experience in regards to reinjury experience. As for the frequency of reinjury, the players with more than 10 years of experience had more experiences in being reinjured once than by the players with less than 10 years of experience, and many players with more than 3 years of experience had the experience of being reinjured more than three times.
Third, in the sports injury and rehabilitation characteristics according to the practice hours, there were many knee injuries for the players who practiced for more than 5 hours, and there were many muscle/ligament/tendon rupture injuries in regards to the type of sports injury. In regards to the main person who treats the occurred injury, every group said they themselves treat the injury except for the group that responded that they practice for less than 5 hours, and they said they use ice pack as the first treatment for the injury. Every group said they go to the hospital for treatment as for the injury treatment method, and that the injury treatment period was 1~2 weeks, and that they have practiced for less than 5 hours for the rehabilitation exercise after treating the injury. As for the main rehabilitation exercise method, every group except for those who exercise for more than 8 hours said they do stretching the most. In regards to the period of returning to training, they returned to training upon 70~80% of recovery. As for the decision on returning to training, the participants said they themselves make the decision.
In conclusion, there were differences in the sports injuries according to the weight class, experience and practice hour of the players and the frequency of reinjury was high for the players with the experience of reinjury and low level of rehabilitation exercise practice. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop a plan for sports injury prevention, systematic rehabilitation treatment after injury and reinjury risk reduction through appropriate training programs according to the individual characteristics of players and the practice of correct rehabilitation treatment method.
