This research was aimed at empirically verifying the effects of the depression and self-effectiveness of university students on their personal relationship and examining the medium effect of appearance satisfaction in those casual relationships. To achieve such goals, this research set the following research problems.
First, are the depression, self-effectiveness, appearance satisfaction, and personal relationship trends of university students different according to the demographic characteristics? Second, is there any correlation among the depression, self-effectiveness, appearance satisfaction, and personal relationship trends of university students? Third, what effects do the depression, self-effectiveness, and appearance satisfaction of university students on their personal relationship trends? Fourth, does appearance satisfaction have the medium effect in the relationship between the depression and self-effectiveness and their personal relationship trends?
For those problems, a questionnaire survey was conducted for 600 university students living in Seoul, Chungcheongnam-do, and Jeollabuk-do, and while 591 questionnaires were collected, a total of 572 questionnaires were finally used to analyze data after excluding unfaithful and unmarked questionnaires. By using PASW(Predictive Analytics SoftWare) statistics 18.0 and AMOS 16.0 statistics analysis program, t and F verification, the correlation analysis, and the multiple regression analysis were conducted for data, and direct and indirect effects were analyzed within the 5% scope of significance level to verify statistical significance.
Through these analyses, the major results of this research are summarized as follows.
First, the depression, self-effectiveness, appearance satisfaction, and personal relationship trends of university students showed meaningful differences according to the demographic characteristics.
Second, there was a weak correlation among the depression, self-effectiveness, appearance satisfaction, and personal relationship trends of university students.
Third, as a result of analyzing the effects of the depression of university students on their personal relationship trend, physiological depression factors alone turned out to have a meaningful negative effect on their personal relationship type.
Fourth, as a result of analyzing the effects of the self-effectiveness of university students on their personal relationship trend, confidence and self-control factors turned out to have a meaningful positive effect on their personal relationship type.
Fifth, as a result of analyzing the medium effect of appearance satisfaction in terms of the effects of the depression of university students on their personal relationship type, appearance satisfaction turned out to have a meaningful medium effect in terms of the depression of university students on their personal relationship trend.
Sixth, as a result of analyzing the medium effect of appearance satisfaction in terms of the effects of the self-effectiveness of university students on their personal relationship type, appearance satisfaction turned out to have a meaningful medium effect in terms of the self-effectiveness of university students on their personal relationship trend.
Seventh, as a result of analyzing the effects of the appearance satisfaction of university students on their personal relationship trend, both body type and appearance factors turned out to have a meaningful positive effect on their personal relationship type.
On the basis of those research results, the meanings of this research are as follows.
While a number of researches have been conducted on the correlation and casual relationship among the personal relationship trend variables of university students, few researches have been conducted, which considered the casual relationship of each and every four variables. In addition, in terms of the effects of the depression and self-effectiveness of university students on their personal relationship trends, there have been no or few researches which succeeded in verifying even the medium effect of appearance satisfaction. Therefore, it can be said that this research is meaningful in that it considered even the medium effect of appearance satisfaction.
In addition, this research, unlike the existing researches which focused mainly on depression, self-effectiveness and personal relationship trends, unveiled the importance of appearance satisfaction in terms of the correlation and the cause relationship among these variables by limiting the subjects of this research to university students who are sensitive to their appearance.
