The purpose of this study was to develop a play program of national classical music for infants and toddlers in an attempt to provide an opportunity for infants and toddlers to receive education during their play through national classical music in pursuit of their sound development and growth.
As infanthood experiences have a great impact for a lifetime, national classical music education is mandatory in infanthood, and actualizing that education in infanthood is one of the top priorities for the national classical music education community.
Infants and toddlers refer to those who are aged between 0 and 36 months old and include newborn babies. They are in desperate need of attention and caring from parents. In this study, babies who are aged between 0 and 36 months old and include newborn babies were defined as infants and toddlers as well. Infanthood could be classified into three stages in consideration of physical development, cognitive development, verbal development, socioemotional development, the development of play and musical development.
Stage 1 involves newborn babies to 12-month-olds. Infants make the largest physical, cognitive and socioemotional development in this period in their lifetime. At the same time, they need the attention and caring of their rearers the most in this period, and the paternal attitude of their parents exercises a great influence on their development.
Stage 2 is comprehensive of 13-month-olds to 24-month-olds, who are called toddlers. They start to speak significant words in this period and make great strides in verbal development to the extent that this period is called the period of verbal explosion.
Stage 3 includes 25-month-olds to 36-month-olds, who are also called toddlers. They are able to express themselves clearly as they start to make a verbal development. They can play according to the given rules and understand and care about others. And they can role-play through empathy. There is a critical period that they make a specific kind of development, and they attain a higher and more refined development by coordinating their function developed in a critical period with existing functions.
In this study, four different kinds of play activities were prepared in consideration of the developmental tasks of infants and toddlers: body play, word play, creative expression and sensory exploration. Those activities was combined with national classical music to develop the inborn musicality of the infants and toddlers, to make their play more exciting and to guide their parental attachment in the right direction.
This study attempted to develop a play program of national classical music geared toward infants and toddlers in consideration of their development and the objectives of infant education, as the necessity and importance of infanthood national classical music education are increasingly stressed. After the program was actually provided to infants and toddlers in different educational institutions, the infants, toddlers and their parents showed interest in the program and its music. The infants and toddlers were exposed to national classical music in diverse ways, and the parent got to have a better understanding of national classical music. Given the fact that parents have a huge impact on the play of infants and toddlers, it's important to introduce national classical music to them and to provide information on that.
There is room for improvement in the national classical children's songs provided in this study in that the songs aren't diverse enough in terms of musical characteristics and content. In order to offer more effective and quality infanthood national classical music education, the development of national classical children's songs geared toward infants and toddlers is urgently required. The program presented in this study is expected to be utilized in educational institutions or daily routine life, and if the sound source of the program is produced, it will become a more practical teaching material.
