This research is conducted to investigate the factors related to adjustment of college for nursing students to college and to develop a collective model for successful prediction and concrete paths of the factors. Based on Bronfenbrenner(1979) and ecological systems theory, a conceptual framework and hypothetical model were built. The factors of micro system, such as father attachment, mother attachment, stress and stress of clinical practice are set as exogenous variables, the organisms factors, such as psychological well-being, coping and result variable, such as adjustment to college are set as endogenous variables. As a result of multicollinearity analysis as a pre-test of covariance structure analysis, however, father attachment was removed before the actual test because of high correlation coefficient with mother attachment. The measurement tools were used after verifying their reliability and validity. Data collection was conducted from May 19th 2010 to Jun 4th 2010. 531 questionnaires were used for data analysis after distributing 560 sheets to senior students in 8 different locations. Data was analyzed with SPSS 18.0 Win program and AMOS 18.0.
The results are as follows.
1. The conformity of the hypothetical model was =1625.29(p=.00), df=309, /df=5.26, GFI=.78, AGFI=.74, RMSEA=.09, CFI=.78, NFI=.75, NNFI=.75, RMR=.06, PNFI=.66, which means the conformity was acceptable and requires adjustment of model.
2. To increase the conformity, the model, was adjusted by removing observing variables whose causing factors explaining potential variables, are lower. The conformity of the revised model was =514.11(p=.00), df=137, /df=375, GFI=.91, AGFI=.87, RMSEA=.07, CFI=.92, NFI=.89, NNFI=.90, RMR=.03, PNFI=.71, which means a new model was more suitable than the previous model.
3. Through the modified model, 7 hypotheses out of 12 were supported.
4. According to the results, the explanatory power of the model for the college nursing students' adjustment was 62%. Following is direct, indirect and total effects for each endogenous variable.
A. For the psychological well-being, direct, indirect and total effects were significant. The clinical stress has showed only direct and total effect. The coping has showed only direct and total effect.
B. Mother attachment has showed direct and total effect on coping.
C. Mother attachment was significant only in indirect and total effects on adjustment to college. Stress of clinical practice had a direct effect. Psychological well-being had direct and total effects. Coping had direct, indirect and total effects.
In conclusion, mother attachment does not have a direct effect on adjustment to college life but does have psychological well-being and coping, which eventually affect adjustment to college life. Also, the more psychological well-being and coping usage frequency, and the less stress of clinical practice, the higher score of adjustment to college life.
Therefore, to improve an adjustment to college life, it is recommended to decrease the stress of clinical practice and to develop an practical environment. Also, it is recommended to improve an adjustment to college life by direct method of developing psychological well-being and coping improvement program to improve mother attachment. The research is meaningful in a sense that it explains the cause and effect relationship between adjustment to college life and relevant variables to predict comprehensive dimensional explanation of adjustment of college life for nursing students
