The history of ceramics is closely related to food, clothing, and shelter
It probably is a harmony of nature and culture, the past and the present of a nation and its cultural cradle. The Celadon, grayish-blue-powdered celadon, white porcelain and earthenware are korean cultural contents, the important foundation of modern ceramic culture representing Korea, and furthermore the origin of introducing Korean ceramic culture to the world. Since 1960s, we have added new methods to such typical traditional methods, resulting in the accomplishment of qualitative and quantitative extension in ceramic realm of today. Various concepts of ceramics and its formative values have been established, and its form, material and methods also changed variously.
The decoration techniques for ceramic expression includes those creative process such as extrusion, drying, glazing and plasticity, and thanks to the development of lots of materials, ceramic expression has widely progressed today.
The purpose of this study, titled as a study on decoration technique development for ceramic expression 「on Cheomjang technique 」 lies in build up of theoretical background of the decoration technique and enlarge the realm of ceramic expression through creative idea and analysis, the results of experiments under the condition of inheriting the tradition of decoration technique. Firstly, this researcher will identify the origin & change process of ceramic culture through existing bibliography and data, and put out the valid basis of the forming of Cheomjang technique and named as sharp+decoration. The idea of developing the technique could be said as the reinterpretation and expression of Gwiyal technique of grayish-blue-powdered celadon, the ceramic decoration technique unique to Korea. Cheomjang technique is engobe technique using the viscosity of muddy water for the broadening of application of today's ceramic decoration through analysis on material characteristics and understanding of welding method and decoration efficiency.
This study is about decoration technique using muddy water, the core technique development, and the muddy used for the technique is called as engobe or slip in Western. Historically, the grayish-blue-powdered celadon made 400 years ago, that is, made in the Joseon Dynasty period hold the tradition of engobe technique compared with engobe ceramic made in the 18th century perhaps. Traditional techniques such as inlay, stamping, artificial flower, iron stroke, quiyal, dipping techniques wre the traditional techniques used for the making of Grayish-blue-powdered celadon, which are still used for decorating today's ceramic, and they are widely applicable through development.
Cheomjang techniques, derived from traditional techniques of our own is a technique of using muddy water repeating drying and plastering many times aiming to form a certain size of projections on ceramic. Making process revealed a close relation between the viscosity of muddy water and the projection welding. In other words, the number, thickness, height and shape of projection are dependent on the condition of muddy water.
This researcher is to secure the reproducibility of Cheomjang technique through the scientific analysis and experiments on muddy water material and the change in projection welding. Brookfield viscometer, laser particle size analyzer, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope belonging to Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology were used for scientific analysis. This experiment targets to detect a valid basis of technique development and the order of the experiment is as follows. First, the analysis on projection depending on viscosity change, second, analysis on the projection depending on particle size change, third, analysis on the roughness of molding surface, fourth, analysis on the direction to which muddy water is plastered
Stable expression of Ceomjang technique will be secured by quantificating the change in the number, shape, height, thickness of projection depending on the viscosity change in muddy water and particle size change with the findings from the analysis. The expression of directional property of projection welding will be secured through the analysis on artificial flow of projection development and the direction to which muddy water is plastered with the analysis on the roughness of molding surface.
Cheomjang technique and decoration efficiency in this researcher's work from 2004 to 2010 and the diversity of projection expression, the results of experiments will be suggested as the basis of identifying the reproducibility of the technique in the work
This researcher will borrow the analysis on the works by art critics and the manager in charge of Cheongju International Craft Biennale for objective analysis on Cheomjang technique exhibited in 2006 and 2009 invitation exhibition to suggest the validity of ceramic decoration technique and widen the today's ceramic realm
As stated above, this researcher will analyze and suggest the results of the experiment on the development process of ceramic decoration technique, an engobe technique using muddy water, and establish the data of projection phenomenon in Cheomjang technique this researcher learned through my entire body, and then will set it up as this researcher's work direction and a technique in expressing ceramic decoration.
