Introduction & Purpose: Ageism is inappropriate treatment toward elderly people and it is prevalent in various ways not only at home but also in our society as a whole. Such discriminatory experiences can make elderly people feel isolated from various sectors of the society and take negative attitudes toward their lives, so they can lower the quality of life. So this study wants to find out the severity of the ageism homebound elderly people and variables which can have influence on the discrimination such as their perceived health status, ability of daily living activity, self-esteem, depression, loneliness and family support. Based on these, I would like to use the data for nursing intervention to improve the quality of life of elderly people and help them enjoy their aging.
Method: The period of collecting the material was from June 10th of
2010 to July 5th of 2010, a preliminary search prior to the main investigation was carried out for the selection of analysis tools. Afterwards, the main investigation was carried out from September 10th of 2010 to October 10th of 2010, by surveying 253 elderly above the age of 65, residing in the areas of Kyung-gi-do.
The analysis of data was carried out using SPSS Window 15.0 Program. To satisfy the purpose of the research, real number and percentage, different to a dependent variable of general characteristics, average, standard deviation, Spearman correlation, and a multiple regression was performed.
Result :
1. The average ageism rate among the elderly was 1.99, which was
lower than expected. The rates for related factors, perceived health
status(2.66), self-esteem(3.10), ability of daily living activity(3.40),
depression(2.77), loneliness(3.18), family support(3.36) were found to
be respectively.
2. According to the analysis on the relationship between ageism and its
factors, depression and loneliness showed positive correlations. However,
perceived health status, self-esteem, ability of daily living activity and
family support showed negative correlations. (r=-.058 ~ .493).
3. Ability of daily living activity(β=-.258) showed to be the β most
important of the ageism factors for the elderly. Depression (β=.215),
Family support(β=-.205), self-esteem(β=-.116), perceived health
status(β=.012), loneliness(β=.011) showed to follow the order
respectively, and the correlation accuracy was 35.1%.
Conclusion: This study could find out and verify that there are factors that can have influence on ageism of the elderly people such as their perceived health status, ability of daily living activity, self-esteem, depression, loneliness and family support. To prevent and solve the perceived ageism of the elderly people, family members have to take thoughtful, supportive and warm care of elderly people. It can encourage the elderly people to maintain and improve their daily living activities, which leads to strengthened positive perception of their health conditions their boosted self-esteem. Furthermore, to help elderly people to get out of depression and loneliness, appropriate and comprehensive mental health and cultural education programs for elderly people have to be developed.
