The medical philosophical basis of the classical texts of Korean Traditional Medicine(KTM) is the Ŭm Yang Theory. In order to comprehend the Ŭm Yang Theory fully, prior understanding of the Changing Numbers(易數) and the Theory of Changes(易理) is inevitable. Ancient texts refer to the close relationship of the physiology of the Five Jang organs and Six Bu organs(五臟六腑) and the Theory of Changes of the Eight Trigrams of the The Book of Changes. It is a great amount of work to review the whole theory of internal organs. In this study, the Liver/Gallbladder which fall in the category of Wood with signs Son(巽) and Jin(震) were reviewed firsthand as a beginning of a much larger study.
The study was carried out in the following contents. First, the changes of Three and Eight, which are the changing numbers of the Ŭm Wood and Yang Wood respectively, were examined in the Hado(河圖)․Nakseo(洛書) in terms of innate and acquired changes. Next, the theoretical changes of the Son(巽) and Jin(震) from the Innate Eight Trigrams to the Acquired Eight Trigrams were examined in relation to the 24 divisions of the year, mainly the climate changes of coldness and heat. Finally, the relationship with other internal organs from the theoretical position of Heavenly Stems Napgab(天干納甲) and Earthly Branches Napgab(地支納甲) of the Son(巽) and Jin(震) were examined.
In order to uncover the underlying medical principle, the Changing Numbers of the Hado(河圖)․Nakseo(洛書), the innate and acquired changes of the Eight Trigrams and the Napgab(納甲) of the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches were dealt with in the Ŭm Yang and Five Elements perspective, rather than focusing on the Sign explanations, Element explanations etc.
The major physiological functions of the Liver mentioned in the Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經), which are storing blood(藏血), distributing blood(散血), acting as the General(將軍), comes up with strategies(謀慮), detoxification(解毒), and so on were discussed in terms of Three, the innate and acquired changes of the Son(巽), and the Napgab(納甲) of the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches of the Son(巽) which fall in the category of Ŭm Wood.
The major physiological functions of the Gallbladder, which are storing bile juice, distributing bile juice, the ministerial fire(相火), center of balance(中正), center of decisions(決斷), Wind-heat(風熱) etc. were discussed in terms of Eight, the innate and acquired changes of the Jin(震), and the NapGap(納甲) of the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches of the Jin(震) which fall in the category of Yang Wood.
The goal of this study was to find out the close relationship between the major physiological functions of the Liver and Gallbladder and the Theory of Change of the Son(巽) and Jin(震). For a correct understanding of Korean Traditional Medicine(KTM), study of the Ŭm Yang Theory must exceed the schematic knowledge and consider the changes of Heaven and Earth in both spatial and temporal terms, which are the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches respectively. The basic laws governing the physiological changes of the body also use the Theory of Change of the Five Elements. Modernization of KTM should be based on such grounds.
