Global warming due to increases in greenhouse gas caused climatic change, generates meteorological disaster that we never experienced along with changes in climate, and affects on entire economy and society. The mass media plays a role as a social organization that discusses about preparation for future prevention and informs risks that modern people who live in society coexisting with technology and risk did not recognize and let them make to devise its alternation. In this study, we analyzed evening overall news of 3 major broadcasters to look into how the media reports 'meteorological disaster' among natural disasters frequently occurred in worldwide. Concrete cases of meteorological disasters are 'heavy snow in Jan. 04, 2010' and 'heavy rain a day before Korean Thanksgiving Day in Sep. 2010'. These two disasters have in common that has extremely short announcement. Also, at the same time it has different disaster factors which are 'heavy snow' and 'heavy rain', so we determined that it could be proper cases to find out characteristics of broadcast regarding disaster report.
As results of the research, first of all, disaster report on television has characteristics which report focusing on 'progress of situation' of 'the day of disaster occurred' in 'reporter report' form. From a such characteristic, report of meteorological disaster could be inferred that tends to be patterned, uniformed, and avoid taking risk.
Second, report of meteorological disaster on Television had characteristics that uses interview from 'victims' in emotional level and delivers its details mainly with 'human interests frame' and 'episodic frame'. It refers that a report of meteorological disaster is sensational and emotional and focused on reporting arousing situation to attract viewers rather than cause analysis of the disaster and its measures and produces dependent image of disaster victims actively.
Third, report of climatic disaster on Television focused on role playing from the aspect of 'provision of disaster information' and is insufficient in prevention function, environmental supervision, or inspection report. It could be inferred from that 3 major broadcasters reported two disasters as 'episodic frame' on over half of the reports, article of 'thematic frame' stayed above 30%, and reports in 'responsible attribution frame' were relatively very lower than 'human interests frame'. For instance, the reports were shown average 4.4% in 'January heavy snow' and 10.1% in 'heavy rain a day before Korean Thanksgiving Day' from 3 major broadcasts.
This research is significant that analyzed characteristics of report regarding meteorological disaster far away from expectable range and that forewarning period was extremely short. Various aspects of meteorological disaster relating researches are expected for supplementation of limit on this research.
