It is obviously true that Korea and China are close geographically but far at the same time. Both countries have been affected by Confucianism over the thousands of years and their people cherish very similar values due to cultural homogeneity. Generally speaking, commercials reflect contemporary trends and cultural values appreciated by the society. In this sense, it is expected that there might be some differences between Korean and Chinese commercials. Commercials are the product not only of economic but also of cultural activities of each county. Therefore, this study is based on the assumption that the cultural differences between Korea and China are reflected on commercials that are often called 'cultural product'.
In this study, as to find out differences between Korean and Chinese TV commercials containing humorous code, types of expressions used in commercials are classified as aggressive, sexual and nonsense humors based on contents while classified as pun, joke, something ludicrous, satire and irony based on techniques used in the commercials for a comparative analysis according to characteristics of each classification. Despite of geographical proximity of being located in Asia, Korea and China have different political and economic institutions. By taking this into account, we conducted a comparative analysis on how differently creative elements are used in TV commercials in both countries and what kind of humorous expressions are seen in them.
The study conducted shows that in terms of commercials containing aggressive humors, commercials in Korea and China where authoritarianism is relatively prevalent do not use aggressive humors in equal relationship or toward younger people. For commercials for which sexual humor are used are frequently seen in both countries but they have different characteristics depending on whether the country is male-oriented or female-oriented. Nonsense humor commercials are the most frequently-witnessed type of commercial in both countries and little cultural differences are found in nonsense humor commercials that only show exaggerated visual elements. In terms of technical classification, expecially for commercials with pun and joke, Chinese commercials cause laughter with the use of playful words or copy while Korean ones use humorous circumstances that might cause laughter along with joke. As for humorous commercials with ludicrous factors, similar trend was found in both countries while commercials with satire toward politicians or celebrity are described more directly and actively in Korea than the ones in its counterpart. Regarding commercials with irony, Chinese commercials use them more than Korean ones.
This study compared characteristics of expressive factors of humors that Korean and Chinese commercials use and can provide theoretical basic data for further studies regarding comparative studies on Korean and Chinese commercials, ways of appealing that both Chinese and Korean commercials use, creative strategies and so on. It is also expected that this study can be useful data in advertisement communication for Korean companies planning to step into Chinese market and offer realistic insight to establish and implement creative advertisement strategies that can work for cultural characteristics of China.
