The objectives of this study were to examine the influence of peer conformity on jevenile delinquency and to examine moderating effects of self-control and parental supervision on the relationship between peer conformity and juvenile delinquency.
Participants who responded to a self-report survey were 843 students(grade 4-12) from Gyeongsangnam-do. And the research period was about two weeks from 26th of October, 2010 to 5th of November, 2010.
Finally, there were 839 completed and valid questionaires. Among them, 499 were male(59.6%) and 338 were female(40.3%). The participants were aged between 11 and 19. Among them, 147 were elementary schoolchild, 272 were middle school student, 138 were general High School student and 282 were technical High School student.
This study used frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, hierarchial regression analysis through the SPSS Win 18.0 statistic programme.
The findings of this study can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, followings are the specific results about descriptive statistics analysis on major components. The mean of whole delinquency was 49.67. Viewed apart, the mean of status delinquency was 12.12, violence delinquency was 83.61 and sexual delinquency was 49.67. Furthermore, the mean of peer conformity, independent variable was 3.21, self-control, moderating variable was 2.38 and parental supervision was 3.27.
Secondly, as a result of hierarchial regression analysis, peer conformity has meaningful influence on whole delinquence. In order words, a higher level of peer conformity was associated with higher level of juvenile deliquency. Viewed apart, peer conformity influenced on status delinquency, violence delinquency and sexual delinquency.
Thirdly, adolescents' self-control moderated the relationship between peer conformity and whole delinquency. Viewed apart, Adolescents' self-control moderated the relationship between peer conformity and violence, sexual delinquency. But self-control couldn't moderate the relationship between peer conformity and status delinquency.
Fourthly, parental supervision moderated the relationship between peer conformity and whole delinquency. Viewed apart, parental supervision moderated the relationship between peer conformity and sexual delinquency. But self-control couldn't moderate the relationship between peer conformity and status, violence delinquency.
Importances and welfare implications of this study are as follows.
Firstly, because peer conformity significantly influence juvenile delinquency, multilateral approach, designed with peer relationship should be taken to map out a specific plans for intervention about delinquency. So, methods for proper formation of peer relationship and guidance for peer group readers who control the peer group's thought and behavior pattern should be provided to adolescents.
Secondly, this study is meaningful since I could find moderating variables which can decrease the effect of risk factor. In this study, self-control and parental supervision moderated the relationship between peer conformity and whole delinquency.
Thirdly, but, self-control and parental supervision couldn't moderate the relationship between peer conformity and status delinquency. These results are probably because adolescents have a cheap opinion of status delinquency. However, because status delinquency like drinking and smiking are also risky for adolescent's body and soul, adolescents should be received education in status delinquence's seriousness.
Fourthly, self-control moderated the relationship between peer conformity and violence delinquency, but parental supervision couldn't. These results are probably because adolescence is free oneself from their parents and adolescents act on his own judgment. So, adolescents should be received education to establish self-identity and self- esteem in order to live a active life.
Fifthly, self-control and parental supervision moderated the relationship between peer conformity and sexsual delinquency. These results are probably because adolescents recognize the dangerousness of sexsual delinquence. So, parents should be received education in parental supervision. And parent-child communication programs should be provised besides self-control improvement.
Like this, this study is meaningful since I analysis the relationships between variables and case-by-case delinquency like status, violence, sexsual.
Also, school welfare should be enacted to intervene in peer relationship and juvenile delinquency in school. And the multilateral liaison between adolescent, family, school and community institutions needs to be established to draw concentrated, effective, systematic and continuous results.
