The purpose of this study is to look into the real condition of the counseling-training for the teachers in elementary schools, and to provide basic data to make the training more realistic by finding problems and improvements of the counseling-training the teachers are participating. For this purpose, the questions previously set are follows: First, How is the real condition of the counseling-training for the elementary schools teachers like?
Second, What are the problems of the counseling-training for the elementary schools' teachers?
Third, What is the ideal counseling-training for the elementary schools teachers?
This study was conducted with the subject of 280 teachers from 9 different schools in Seoul, who was each received a copy of questionnaire regarding the questions set above. Among the total, 244 copies of the questionnaire were used for the final data, and the uncollected or unfaithful responses were excluded. To analyze the differences in the teachers' perception on the real condition and the improvements of the counseling-training found in the collected data, the frequency and percentage of the responses were calculated to look into overall tendency and tendencies depending on the backgrounds. χ2-test was used to verify the differences of the responses depending on variables, t-test was used for the two independent variable, mean and standard deviation for consecutive verifying questions, F-test was run by using one-way ANOVA for more than three groups, and SPSS12.0 Program was used for statistical treatment.
The result of this study is summarized as follows:
First, the most percentage of people was trained by counseling-training provided by remote organizations run by private or affiliated with a college. 90% of the people responded either 'to be useful and helpful when guiding the students' or 'to upgrade the quality of professional ability in student counseling' as the motivation to take the training and this coincides with the purpose of the counseling-training. This result shows that the training program needs to be complemented and be applied by the results especially for female teachers in their thirties and forties whose motivations and needs for the training is the highest.
Second, the fact that the needs for the counseling-training are fairly high is acknowledged. The percentage of people who knows about the training at the proper training institutes, visiting training, remote training from Education Bureau of cities and provinces was average but number of people who knows about public contest form of elementary educational training was found to be lower than the average. Overall, average or lower than average degree of knowledge of the teachers about counseling-training shows that advertising and guidance about the training should be improved, increased and also be complemented in the way it is being acknowledged by people.
Third, the score of level of satisfaction of the teachers who have taken the training program was average of 5, which means the training was fairly useful. The location and distance were the important elements on high satisfaction level of visiting counseling-training. The satisfaction level for the trainer was 5.34 for visiting training, 4.85 for public contest from of elementary education, and 5.44 for remote training. Even though the score of public contest from of elementary education is supposed to be the highest because it is set up by the demands for the environments and organized self-leading training, the result showed differently. This is due to low level of satisfaction from the locations, contents, and trainers. Selection of the contents and professionalism of the trainer should be improved and be more helpful to the teachers. Also, the standard number trainee for each course should be less than 35 to make the satisfaction about the location higher.
Forth, the satisfaction level of remote training was closed to point 5. However young teachers who are in their twenties or have 6 to 10 years of teaching experience showed less satisfaction level compared to what they have expected and how other teacher felt about the training. This requires quality management of the remote counseling-training and tries to increase satisfaction level of those young teachers.
Fifth, the most responded obstacle to take the counseling-training at the proper training institutes was lack of time but for the teachers who are in their twenties and thirties responded the obstacle to be lack of information. The lack of information on public contest form of elementary customized counseling-training was found to be the top obstacle based on the answers from 90.5% of the teachers who are in their twenties and 85% of the teachers who are in their thirties. If it is the lack of information that is being the biggest problem, then the advertising or the way of providing the training program must be having some problem which has to be improved. More advertisement and PR should be used and guidance about the training better be more organized for the teachers to find much more information easily.
Sixth, the highest hindrance to the remote counseling-training was 'more interest in other type of training'. The basic cause for this problem was that the number of those, of 23 remote institutes runs by Education Bureau of cities and provinces, which have counseling-training program and the number of classes held in these institutes were both far less compared to other types. Only 20 out of 51 remote organizations run privately or affiliated with a college were found to have classes on counseling. This fact makes the improvements on increasing the numbers of institutes that has counseling-training program and actual courses held in the institutes urgent.
Seventh, the teachers responded 'visiting counseling-training' as the most ideal type of counseling-training. The result also shows that ideal training time is 30 hours and the ideal trainer was described as someone who is both an elementary teacher and a professional in counseling. The most wanted contents and courses were shown to be 'decided based on analysis of the needs of the teachers'. The most ideal counseling-training program should consider all of above key factors specifically drawn from the teachers.
Eighth, the group training needs to be 'applicable to the real school campus' and remote training needs to have 'good enough and faithful contents and methods' in order to activate the training program to the full extent. Therefore, the training programs should ensure internal stability of the contents and methods. The improvements is not only need at the institutes or organizations but at the Korea Education Research and Information Service appointed as supporting center for remote educational training in 20009. The elements to improve should be based on the opinions of the teachers and the results of studies.
