Modern people place significance on hair as well as the skin. They are aware of the necessity of healthy and beautiful hair and have a lot of interest in it. To have glossy and sound hair, one should protect his or her hair from various hair-damaging factors, and preventive and sustained hair care is important as it's not easy to recover hair once it is damaged.
The purpose of this study was to examine hair-damaging factors for women in their 20s and up, women's awareness of hair care and the state of their actual hair care in an effort to provide some information on the right hair care. The subjects in this study were 377 women who were in their 20s and up and resided in Seoul and Daejeon. A survey was conducted to gather data. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 15.0 program. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained, and x2(Chi-square) test, frequency analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA were utilized.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, regarding the subjective health status of hair, the largest group of the women investigated found their hair to be in a normal state of health. The hair treatment they received most often at beauty parlors was perm(33.2%), followed by haircut(25.7%) and dyeing/bleaching (23.6%). As for preserving hair health and having a beautiful hairstyle, the majority(70.8%) prioritized preserving hair health over beautiful hairstyle.
Second, as for shampooing, the biggest group made use of general shampoo products. Most of them shampooed their hair everyday, and the greatest group did that in the morning. The biggest group used a hair conditioner after shampooing. In relation to the way of shampooing, the largest group(28.5%) rinsed their hair several times to get rid of all the shampoo burbles. The greatest group got shampoo on the hair and cleaned it by making bubbles(19.5%), and the second biggest group scrubbed the scalp with shampoo by using fingertips as if they had performed fingerpressure therapy(19.1%). The third greatest group had a shampoo by making bubbles as if they had rubbed the hair(14.7%). In regard to post-shampoo hair drying, the biggest group dried the hair with a hair dryer after removing moisture from it with a towel. More than half used a hair dryer everyday.
Third, the largest group had their hair dyed every two months. The younger women got the hair dyed to make themselves look more charming, and the older ones did that to hide gray hair. Those who had healthier hair didn't get their hair dyed or bleached. As to perm, the biggest group got their hair permed every three or four months. The women who were in their 20s got a heat permanent often, and the older women got a (basic rod permanent). Those whose hair was damaged got a heat permanent more often than the others.
Fourth, the women pointed out chemical elements such as perm, hair dyeing or bleaching and the use of poor-quality hairdressing products as the primary causes of hair damage. They were mostly cognizant of the necessity of hair care, and the biggest group acquired hair-care information from specialists. The largest group(44.6%) never took care of the hair after receiving hair treatment. As for an ordinary hair-care method, 41.9 percent took care of it on their own at home, and 25.7 percent used professional service. 32.4 percent never took care of the hair.
Fifth, in terms of home-care, many made use of treatment products they bought. They took care of the hair at home every two or three days or once a week in general. Their favorite home-care product was hair pack, and they found it to be effective after using it. The largest number of the women who used beauty parlors received professional service, and they spent 30 to less than 50 thousand won at a time on it. It usually took 30 minutes to less than two hours to receive the service. Most of them were satisfied with the effect of professional service, and the unsatisfied women viewed the service as time-consuming. The biggest number of the women who never took care of the hair cited economic burden as the reason, and approximately half them intended to take care of the hair in the future. Their favorite hair-care method was using scalp-care clinics(36.1%), followed by home-care(34.4%).
