The purpose of this thesis is to examine how much learners of Korean language on the intermediate level recognize the characteristics and the methods of discourse that everyone belonging to the community of a Korean language discourse agrees to teach them in such a way that they can express their thoughts in writing in accordance with the characteristics of the genre that is expected and required by the community. For the purpose, we have determined that the genres that are needed most by the learners of Korean language on the intermediate level are the genre of 'Information writing' and the genre of 'Persuasive writing', and identified explanation as the most representative writing of the former and essay as the most representative writing of the latter, to be used as the target genres for our analysis.
In order to examine genre recognition of the learners of Korean language on the intermediate level, we had each of them to write an explanation and a thesis, and collected equivalent explanations and theses that have been written by native Korean language speakers to serve as the criteria for comparison and analysis. in our effort to find out the difference between the two groups.
The data collected from the native Korean language speakers and the learners of Korean language were evaluated on the basis of five genre knowledge that have been presented in this thesis, namely 'Knowledge on communication purpose', 'Knowledge on the relationship between the writer and the reader', 'Formal knowledge', 'Subject-matter knowledge', and 'Rhetorical knowledge'. On the basis of evaluation points, an analysis was carried out on whether there is a significant difference in genre knowledge between the two groups, and if there is, on which knowledge there is a difference. After the analysis based on evaluation points, another analysis was carried out on concrete aspects using qualitative research methods on each knowledge area. And through this, a comparison and analysis on recognition of explanation genre and essay genre of the native Korean language speaker group and the learner of Korean language group. At the same time, an analysis was carried out on similarities and differences of genre characteristics in the explanations and essays of the learner of Korean language group. The result of the analysis can be summarized as follows:
First, as a result of analysis on explanations by the native Korean language speaker group and the learner of Korean language group based on the aforementioned criteria, a statistically signifiant difference was discovered in the five genre knowledge. It was also discovered that both groups had higher recognition of the 'Knowledge on the writer and the reader' among the five genre knowledge as they both had higher evaluation points on this knowledge. However, the learner of Korean language group had the lowest evaluation points on the 'Formal knowledge', reflecting their poor recognition of the characteristics regarding mono-syllogism and paragraph organization of the explanation.
Second, as a result of analysis on theses by the native Korean language speaker group and the learner of Korean language group based on the aforementioned criteria, a statistically signifiant difference was discovered in the five genre knowledge. It was also discovered that, as in the case of explanation, both groups had the highest recognition of the 'Knowledge on the writer and the reader'. However, the learner of Korean language group had the lowest evaluation points on the 'Formal knowledge' and 'Rhetorical knowledge'. This reflects low recognition of the use of demonstrations for presenting the writer's thought logically and the feasible opinion in their essay.
Third, as a result of comparison and analysis of the learner of Korean language group's explanations and theses on the basis of evaluation points based on the aforementioned criteria, the difference in the five genre knowledge was not noticeable. This reflects that the learner of Korean language group did not fully recognize the difference of genre characteristics in the explanation and the essay.
In this thesis, based on genre theory, it was possible to grasp what the problem was in the writing of the learner of Korean language group by examining the recognition of their genre knowledge as revealed by their writings and to clarify what is practically needed to the learner of Korean language group in the genre-oriented writing education. The failure to examine, however, how genre characteristics as revealed by the writings of the learner of Korean language group could have varied depending on the influence of their native language remains as a limitation of the present thesis.
