This study is to know how to use 'turmeric' excellent in soothing troubled scalp and used in dyeing as a folk remedy, and to examine how pre-and-post-treatment by turmeric affects damaged hair caused by perm redundancy procedures. The test went as follows. First of all, we carried out perm redundancy procedures once, twice and three times to measure their damages. And then we coated turmeric pre-treatment PPT and general post-treatment SPA-T3 before and after perm procedures to examine treatment effects. And finally, we measured absorbances to compare the physical properties while measuring elongations and tensile strengths to compare the mechanical properties. In addition, we wanted to know the relative difference in hair according to the results by pre-and-post-treatment using perm redundancy procedures and turmeric, so we took an electron microscope that showed the specimen fracture surface with its tensile strength measured to study hair's fracture behavior. The outcome of measuring absorbance and tensile strength in perm redundancy treatment, showed that the perm's absorbance increased and its tensile strength decreased as its frequency went up, which concludes that perm redundancy treatment causes higher hair damage. The study outcome showed hair of turmeric treatment had less absorbance than that of none, and
proved its pre-treatment effect. And the study also showed that absorbance of virgin hair was 0.070, that of perm hair with 1, 2, 3 times PPT pre-treatments were 0.078, 0.170, 0.280 respectively, and that of perm hair with 1, 2, 3 times turmeric pre-treatments were 0.120, 0.230, 0.345 respectively, proving PPT has better treatment effect than turmeric. It is assumed that the result came out that way because no keratin(28%) with adsorption was added to turmeric pre-treatment while PPT contained a large amount of keratin with strong treatment effect. But turmeric effect has been proved in tensile strength experiment showing that hair with turmeric treatment has higher strength than normal perm hair. Then study showed that virgin hair was 166, hair with 1, 2, 3 times turmeric perm pre-treatment were 161, 156, 124 respectively, hair with 1, 2, 3 times PPT perm pre-treatment were 159, 147, 136 respectively, which tells us the hair treated by turmeric has better treatment effect than the hair treated by PPT. For post-treatment effect, we conducted turmeric and SPA-T3 post-treatment on specimen with 3-time-perm procedure and measured absorbance and tensile strength. As a result, absorbance of 3-time-perm hair was 0.355, and that of SPA-T3 post-treated hair was 0.260, and that of turmeric post-treated hair was 0.208, which showed that turmeric has good And the tensile strength of 3-time-perm hair was 121, and that of turmeric was 129, and that of SPA-T3 was 143, showing turmeric has treatment effect with higher tensile strength than 3-time-perm treated hair. According to observation of hair's fracture photo taken by an electron microscope, the stress of virgin hair was concentrated throughout the epidermis and its fracture dislocation was spread across the cortex and led to destruction while the 3-time-perm hair lost its cohesion due to a severe damage causing separation between the epidermis and the cortex. However, turmeric and PPT pre-treated hair had less epidermal lifting and less loss of composite membranes between hair cortex cells. In conclusion, it is suggested that we manufacture products which contain turmeric with an excellent scalp-soothing effect and added keratin ingredients with tensile strength and elasticity so that it may be used in managing troubled scalp and in providing adequate treatment for damaged hair caused by perm redundancy procedure.
