This study aims at describing aspects of errors in orthography found in the questions on orthography of foreign learners of the Korean language and present desirable directions of the Korean language education to modify such errors. For this purpose, this study examined aspects of errors in orthography in terms of the following three perspectives: interference from the first language, blindly using the rules of the target language, and influences of the Korean language, the target language, based on existing studies on the reasons for errors assumed in the error analysis hypothesis.
As a result, we found that for errors caused by interference from the first language, learners' potential errors in pronunciation such as phonemic systems appear as errors in orthography. But this kind of errors would be released as the Learners' knowledge of target language deepened. Foreign Learners, as they don't know all the usage of the orthography rules, would always use the rules in wrong ways. This is most seen in the irregular changing of the verbs and adjectives when inflection happens. Learners should remember the stem of the predicates and pay attention the endings they connected with. As the last point, not only the mother language might influence the phonetic system of the target language as there are the words or phrases with the same pronunciation.
Based on the results above, it was assumed that foreign learners' errors are totally different from native speakers' in content and quality. With such assumption, we hope the article is helpful to the Korean Language textbooks and contributes to prevention against fossilization of errors.
